Just because our country has fallen into a depression, does not mean we all have to live in one! We can not only be "not so depressed", but actually be perfectly happy if given the right tools. A depression gives us good cause to do something we should have done long ago:
Simplify.
The world around us is a gift, and I doubt many of us can find the time to listen to the rain on the window, to smell a Lilac, or to feel the sun warm our shoulders. We are too busy watching T.V., playing our video games, and balancing our ever complex finances even notice these things.
I have been fortunate enough to spend many a night, Rummy cards in hand and warm coffee to my right, with my dearest grandmother, while she shared many colorful tales of her life during the depression. Born in 1914, there isn't much she hasn't seen. "In my day, we had only one pair of shoes," as she lay down all three aces on the table, only to beat me once again. Her shoes were good shoes, and because of their quality, that is all anyone needed; just one pair of shoes. She would tell me about my great grandparents, and how their pantries were full of canned goods that they would can themselves, how they would entertain on the weekends with my great grandmother on the piano or singing. She learned to make her clothes, toys, and entertainment.
Some things on this site may not be for you. Not everyone likes to dig in the dirt, and the very thought of cleaning a fish may turn some of you green. It's my hopes that through my site that even though you may disagree with what I say, or already know what I tell you, that there may be just one piece of information that makes your life that much easier and peaceful.
On my site I will post blogs with recipes, patterns, community events and freebies mostly for my Whatcom County residents.
