After about a year of operation it became apparent that there were 3 areas which needed some alteration. These were:
1. The inspection pit closest to the front of the layout. This had always been a problem, as I had opted to solder the rails together in the middle. However, as the baseboard was a bit weaker in the area of the pits, any heavy locos such as Heljans would, after a while, cause these soldered joints to fail. I opted to remove the pit altogether.
2. Two sets of points required re-laying - these had become distorted, probably as a result of a failure on my part to ensure they were completely level before fixing down. Whilst they did not offend the eye, they did create havoc when running some locos over them.
3. As I was going to be relaying the points, I decided to re-model the two stabling sidings to the left of the layout at the same time. I had never really been happy with the layout of them, so took the opportunity to relay them parallel to each other.
Having carried out the above work, operation is now a lot better.
The pictures below were taken of the work at different stages.
