Norwich Whifflers

Supporting Civic Tradition

Welcome to the Home page of Norwich Whifflers

The Freedictionary.com contains the following definition of Whiffler:"An officer who went before processions to clear the way by blowing a horn or otherwise; hence a person who marches at the head of a procession; a harbinger.".

and

from Shakespeare; Henry V, part V "which like a mighty Whiffler 'fore the king, seems to prepare his way".

Norwich Whifflers in the late 20th century were born out of the Norwich Society and Kemps Men of Norwich Morris dancers, suppported by the Lord Mayor, with the intention of preserving the heritage and old traditions associated with the civic ceremonies and office of the Lord Mayor of Norwich. For a fuller history of the Whifflers look at our other pages about our early history and our more recent history

The Norwich Whifflers incorporate a number of other traditional civic characters. You can see what we look like on our Photos pages.

The Norwich Whifflers are not part of Norwich City administration. The Whifflers are independent of the city and are themselves supported by the members, various Norwich charities and some business benefactors. All the activities carried out by the Whifflers are unremunerated, with the exception of legitimate expenses where applicable.

If you would like to become a Whiffler, or support us and our aims in some way please contact us.
