A Typical Day

The day starts with Free Play:

Children experience joy when they are encouraged to pursue their interests. Teachers act as the facilitators to children's learning during free play. Children make choices of what activities to participate in and materials to use. Interactions with other children are encouraged. Through play, children take an active part in their learning. While exploring their environment, children are constantly learning.

The learning centers include:

  • Circle
  • Book
  • Writing
  • Dramatic Play
  • Art
  • Science
  • Block
  • Math
  • Playground
  • Computer

(30 minutes)

After Free Play, our students gather for Circle:

Our group time is an opportunity for children to listen and participate in a supportive group environment. Students hear stories. They learn letters, sounds and numbers with the use of flash cards and songs. Pre-reading skills are promoted as children follow along "reading" printed poetry or songs on sentence strips. Students share their Show and Tell item, give a weather word or follow a bean bag song. Each child has an opportunity to be "Lucky Duck". Lucky Duck is the teacher's helper for the day.

(20-30 minutes)

Children get exercise during Outdoor Play:

When weather permits we have daily outdoor play on the playground. Appropriate clothing for the weather is necessary. Gross motor skills are enhanced as children run, jump and play.

The equipment includes:

  • swings
  • slides
  • climbing apparatus
  • a sandbox
  • 6" and 20" parachutes

(30 minutes)

All that exercise makes kids hungry, so next we have Snack Time:

The healthy approach is best. Children always wash their hands after using a tissue or using the bathroom and before eating Snack. Teachers also practice proper hand-washing techniques. Nutritious foods such as fruit, vegetables and crackers are served. Milk, juice and water are also available to children. Occasionally, snack is made by the students in class.

(15 minutes)

After Snack, we have Lesson Time:

We teach the basics: colors, shapes, letters, numbers and more. When we complete work early, time is filled with a book, puzzle or teacher-directed activity or game. See our Curriculum to get an idea of how lesson time is spent.

(30-45 minutes)

Every day ends with clean up:

Children work together on cleaning up the classroom materials at the end of the day. They find their jackets and anything they've made to bring home.

Children are picked up or have lunch

Children wash their hands and enjoy a healthy lunch which is brought from home.

(30 minutes)

Storytime

Literacy is so important to young learners. Studies have shown that children who are read to often, read earlier. North Salem Preschool has an extensive collection of books to engage children's imaginations.

(15 minutes)

Learning Centers

Educational activities and board games are displayed on tables for free explorative learning to take place. A child can move from one activity to another depending on his or her interest level.

(60 minutes)

Outdoor Play

When weather permits we will have a second opportunity to run and play outdoors.

(30 minutes)

Music

It is important for children to express themselves through music appreciation. Instruments and bean bag activities are fun additions to this time when children use their auditory skills.
