Bristol Britannia

This project is actually for a museum that asked the college if we could help with restoring the oleo. It was to be part of the museum's display of a Britannia being serviced. The oleo that we are restoring will be used to show how oleos are fitted and worked on.

The Bristol Britannia is more commonly known as the Whispering Giant. This is because its engine, the Proteus, was a very quiet engine for its day. This marvelous aircraft had its first test flight on the 16 August 1952 and started the transatlantic route from London to New York on 19 December 1957.

This is the condition of the oleo when it arrived at the college

This is the condition of the oleo when it arrived at the college. The reason that we have  no photos of its work-in-progress is because we worked so fast that we had the oleo cleaned and painted just a few days after we started. We only decided to add this project to the website when the oleo was undergoing  its last stage of restoration. This is how it was just before the rims were cleaned and painted

This is the finished article waiting for collection.
