8 - 14 August 2005 Day 108 - 114

Monday 8 August 2005
I worked at Sigma again today. Tony was exhausted when he got home; he hadn’t got a good enough sleep before doing a night’s work, so Anne gave me a lift to work.

After I finished work for the day, Tony received a call from the labour hire company asking if he could work at the place he worked last night.

Tuesday 9 August 2005
Tony could barely move when he came to collect me from Sigma after work. He’d been lifting 25 – 30kg bags all day with only a 20 minute break, no morning or afternoon tea breaks. Surely they can find younger people to do work like that. Tony was told by others who work there that they can’t keep employees, I wonder why?

Wed 10, Thurs 11, Fri 12 August 2005
The rest of the week I worked full time at Sigma, they’ve asked if for the next couple of weeks I could work 12.30 till 4.30pm. The other girls who work there seem to think that won’t be enough hours to get all the work done, but we’ll see. There are three of us who are casual employees and one is a uni student, she isn’t available as much as they’d like so they have a bit of extra money in the budget and have asked the other two of us to come in all day Monday.

All the food from the fridge in the camp kitchen was stolen again this week. I was feeling very pleased with myself because we had our food in Andy’s fridge, that feeling was short lived, I remembered that we had icecreams in the fridge because Andy’s freezer doesn’t keep them cold enough. Oh well, at least it was only icecreams this time, not everything like before.

Saturday 13 August 2005
Last week I had been on the Ulysses forum and followed a link to another member’s website (also with freewebs) about the trip they are on. I left a message for Gary and Monnica asking where they are now and they answered saying they were at Ayr about 80 km from Townsville.

I was sitting outside the tent today doing some work on the mosaic when a van pulled up and the lady asked me was I Gypsy. Monnica and Gary had come to Coral Coast hoping to book a site but they were all booked out. Our site is just past reception so everyone who enters the park drives past our tent.

I rang Tony, who was out at the video shop, and told him that we had visitors. He came back and we had a cuppa with them and then headed down to Gary and Anne’s to introduce them there. You have friends everywhere when you’re a member of Ulysses. It was really nice to meet Gary and Monnica and they don’t live too far from our home, they live at Bemboka near Bega, so it’s highly likely that we’ll catch up with them again.

In the evening we went out for a game of ten pin bowling with Gary and Anne, Jim and Allan weren’t able to make it, maybe another time. We had great fun. The young guys two lanes over had had a bit much to drink and the bowling balls were flying instead of rolling. We cheated a bit and had the bumpers down.

Sunday 14 August 2005
We went to the Willows Market this morning and bought lots of nice fresh fruit and vegetables, it’s the best place to get them. In the afternoon I did a lot more of the mosaic, I haven’t got as much time to work on it now that I’m working.

15 - 21 August 2005 Day 115 - 121

Monday 15 August 2005
I worked a full day today, but for the rest of the week I’m only required in the afternoons.

Tuesday 16 August 2005
In the evening we went to yet another Townsville Ulysses meeting, has another month gone by already? As usual we went for a meal before the meeting; we sat with Jacquie and Sharon for dinner.  After the meeting quite a few of us went to Maccas for coffees or hot chocolates.

Frank and Irene have friends who live in Stanley, which is near Wangaratta, and said that when they’re down that way visiting them they’ll also visit us, that’ll be nice.

Wednesday 17 August 2005
This morning Tony got a call from Adecco asking if he was able to work for CSR. He told them that we had plans in the morning but was available in the afternoon. His position was doing yard work at Readymix and he’s to go in again tomorrow starting at 7am and working through to 4pm.

I had a riding lesson today, it’s been a couple of weeks since my last lesson because I was working full time, I was a little rusty. I’ve got another lesson tomorrow.

Thursday 18 August 2005
Anne drove me to today’s lesson which went much better than yesterday. She waited at the Honda dealership while I had my lesson and then drove me home afterwards. She even drove me to work after lunch.

Friday 18 August 2005
Tony wasn’t required for work today so we went down to town and did a few jobs before he dropped me off to work. After work we organised ourselves for the Ulysses weekend away.

Saturday 19 August 2005
At 8am we were on the road heading for Mission Beach. 6 bikes and a car met at Yabulu petrol station for the ride to Mission Beach which is just over 200km from Townsville. As we neared Tully it started raining, of course, it’s the place with the highest rainfall in Australia. It didn’t last long, but just to be safe I put on the wet weather gear when we stopped for petrol.

We camped at a caravan park at Wongaling Beach which is between South & North Mission Beach.

Tony and I went for a ride to check out the area. There was a really interesting beach that was all rock (not sure if you call it a beach if it doesn’t have sand). We climbed about the rocks and saw coral, living and dead, shells with creatures still living in them and a type of sea slug.

We were surprised by Mission Beach, many people who have stayed at our caravan park have said that they were going to Mission Beach so we were expecting it to be like Airlie Beach or Port Douglas, it’s not. It’s probably more like Cape Tribulation, an eco tourism type place to holiday. There are cassowaries in the region or you can go white water rafting, sky diving or on a boat out to Dunk Island.

We all went to the near by pub for our evening meal. Ron had checked it out earlier in the day and found out that there was an all you can eat buffet in the lounge for $18 a head or a smaller range of meals in the bar. We went to the bar and ordered meals, the choice was very good, the price was cheap, 2 meals for $17 and the food was plentiful and delicious.

After tea we went back to the caravan park and sat around and talked for a couple of hours before going to bed.

Sunday 21 August 2005
Everyone was up early as usual on a camping trip. We ate breakfast and packed up at a leisurely pace.

On the way home we stopped at McDonalds in Ingham for something to eat and drink.

After getting home and unpacking Anne came by to see if Tony and I wanted to go in the pool for a swim, I thought it was too cold for Queenslanders to swim, it is winter after all. We went for a swim, the pool was quite popular today, it was a little cool, but not too bad.

I made a pot of minestrone and we took it to Gary and Anne’s for tea, along with a mud cake for Gary’s birthday.

22-28 August 2005 Day 122 - 128

Monday 22 August 2005
I had a riding lesson this morning, it went pretty well, and in the afternoon I went to work.

Tuesday 23 August 2005
Another lesson this morning, I finally got up to 100kmph, we went out on to Charters Towers Road. I learnt to take off on a hill and rode through traffic.

Work in the afternoon.

Wednesday 24 August 2005
Today I had my third riding lesson for the week, having one each day has given me a bit of continuity and a bit more confidence. Next week I’ll have a go at riding a bigger bike. I went to work in the afternoon.

Thursday 25 August 2005
I worked in the afternoon as usual. In the evening we met a couple from Calgary in Canada, Wendy and Andy, who are travelling by pushbike. They have a tandem bike with a trailer that they bought with them, it comes apart into three pieces and fits in cases to transport on the plane.

Friday 26 August 2005
Our bike went in to Orm Snell the Harley dealers, today to finally get the new exhaust put on. Before we left Wangaratta we had put the bike in for a service and while the mechanic was riding it someone ran into the back of it. Repairs were made but a shonky job was done and by the time we got to Mackay the baffles had gone in the exhaust. Well, it’s finally being put right. The steering lock hasn’t been working properly either and as it’s still under warranty we’re getting that fixed also. It wasn’t until Orm Snell had the bike in pieces that they realised that they were short a couple of screws and wouldn’t be able to finish the job until Monday, so no bike for the weekend.

We talked with Wendy & Andy some more, they were hoping that they would get a job of relocating a camper from Cairns to Alice Springs.

Saturday 27 August 2005
We saw Wendy and Andy first thing this morning; they got the relocation and were heading off for Cairns. They travel 100km per day on the bike and expected to be in Cairns in 4 days and then they have 5 days to drive to Alice Springs.

I finished another mosaic today, a Ulysses butterfly for Anne. Anne has kindly loaned us her bike until we get our own back, she has an 1100 Virago.

In the afternoon we talked with a couple, Johnny and Cheryl, who are originally from Melbourne and are relocating to Mount Isa. They’ve lived on the Gold Coast recently but prior to that they were from the Greensborough area in Melbourne. It’s a small world; they worked for Australia Post with Sammi and Mak from Whittlesea Ulysses.

Gary caught up with us at the camp kitchen at tea time to ask which Ulysses group we rode with at home. He’d had a phone call from Keith Gilbert, the president of Whittlesea group, who is in Townsville and looking to meet up with other Ulysses members. We know Keith as we’ve spent a lot of time with Whittlesea.

This evening we had a phone call from Colin & Desley, who’d stayed beside us in Townsville.

Sunday 28 August 2005
We didn’t do anything much today, we didn’t want to go too far on a borrowed bike, it was nice of Anne to loan it to us and we’ll just use it to get around town, we’d hate for anything to happen to it.

I gave Anne her Ulysses butterfly mosaic which she loved. I wasn’t going to do another mosaic but I’ve got a lot of tiles left and another piece of cement sheet so I started one today.
