Saturday 14 May 2005 Day 22

Because we had travelled part of the way to Rockhampton yesterday it didn’t take us long to get here today. There wasn’t a lot in Gladstone that we wanted to look at; it’s an industrial town with 1200 of the population working in the aluminium smelter.

The roads that we travelled today reminded us of home, there were windy plains surrounded by hills. No longer were there acres and acres of sugar but paddocks with pale grey cows.

Rockhampton has giant cow statues at the entrance to town, it is the beef capital of Australia, it’s also the point where you cross the Tropic of Capricorn.

We arrived at Rockhampton and set up the tent, went and got some groceries and then went for a ride to Yeppoon and seaside town about 36km from Rockhampton. At Yeppoon we went for a walk along the beach and then headed back into town.

Back in town we went to the Botanic Gardens and had a look around. There are some amazing trees in the gardens, giant fig trees that look like something out of the Lord of the Rings, it was getting dark so we didn’t get all the way around the gardens, but what we saw was nice.

Sunday 15 May 2005 Day 23

CAPRICORN CAVES

We started out the day by going to a market and looking through a few shops in Rockhampton.

After the market we went to the Capricorn Caves which are 23km north of Rockhampton. At the caves we had a guided tour through a small portion of the underground caves. The caves have lights strategically placed to show them at their best. One cavern in the caves system is a consecrated chapel where weddings, carols by candlelight and concerts are held, the acoustics are beautiful.

After lunch we went for a ride to Emu Park and along the beachfront to Yeppoon. All along the coastline, not too far off shore, are many islands, one of which is Great Keppel Island. We also got our Z photo for the ABC’s of touring, as there is a place called Zilzie near Emu Park.

Monday 16 May 2005 Day 24

It was 9.30am when we left the caravan park. We called into Fairways Motorcycles, the Rockhampton Harley dealership to have a look around before we left town. The owner gave us some advice on travelling through the north of Australia; he also rang the Mackay dealership to arrange a 16,000km service for us. All the staff in the store were really helpful, one of the friendliest Harley shops we’ve been in. Tony bought a new helmet as his old one was falling apart and they stocked one that he liked.
