Wednesday 27 April 2005 Day 5

Today was a big day. We woke at 6.30am had breakfast and packed. It was 8.45am before we left; we’re going to have to pack a lot more things the night before we leave in future.

Stopped off at Frasers Harley again as the brake light was not working on the bike, the trailer was ok though. The mechanic gave us another light to put on the bike if the problem persists. Asked for directions through Sydney.

Reached Sydney fairly quickly and had a pretty good ride through hardly having to stop at any red lights until we reached the central part of the city. Following the mechanics directions of following the signs to the airport and then following the signs for northern beaches was really easy. It cost $4 to travel through a tunnel that we were told cut quite a bit of time off the trip.

We continued up the No1 highway stopping at a McDonalds for lunch.  Decided to call in and have a look at Newcastle seeing as we had made pretty good time. What a mistake! Nothing much worth looking at in Newcastle and we couldn’t find our way back to the highway. No signs anywhere to give some clue as to where we should go. Asked for directions a couple of times but they weren’t much help. Eventually found a girl in a service station who gave us clear directions (even wrote them down for us) and we were on our way again. We wasted a couple of hours just driving around looking to escape Newcastle.

A sign on the highway near Newcastle read that Port Macquarie was 180km. We continued for quite a distance and the next sign said that Port Macquarie was even further away, I don’t know whether there were two ways we could have gone and we took the long way or not.

Didn’t arrive at Port Macquarie until after 6pm when it was already dark. We set up the tent and went out and bought some food for tea, then settled in and watched some tele before bed.

Thursday 28 April 2005 Day 6

Spent a leisurely day doing nothing much. Had a bit of a look around the centre of town and a few shops.

We’re staying at Melaleuca Caravan Park and it’s lovely, there are lots of palm trees, hibiscus and other tropical plants. Several pet rabbits roam around the park and there is an aviary near the pool. There’s a well equipped camp kitchen for guests to use as well as a tv room. The toilets and showers are sparkling clean and even have piped music.

Friday 29 April 2005 Day 7

Went for a ride to Wauchope where we visited Timbertown a theme park similar to Sovereign Hill but on a much smaller scale. There’s no admittance charge, they just ask for a donation. It’s a recreation of an old logging town. Travelled back to Port Macquarie in the hope of seeing the camel rides on the beach but just missed them and the business owner told me that was the last ride for the day as he had to go to Sydney. It was only about 11am. Rode a bit further around the road to the Tacking Point Lighthouse and took a couple of photos. Chatted with a couple from Southport who said Runaway Bay was a good place to visit.

Went to the Westport Bowling Club for lunch, $7.60 for roast, meatballs or mornay followed by dessert and a cup of tea, pretty good value and a tasty meal.

Back at the caravan park we tried packing the trailer a different way to see if it travels a bit smoother and also to put the things we don’t use too often in the bottom of the trailer so that everything doesn’t need to be unpacked at each stop.
