Friday 6 May 2005 Day 14

We were glad to leave the Gold Coast today, the caravan park wasn’t the best we’ve been in, the noise from the traffic was terrible. Movie World was a little disappointing, what with the rain and no children with us to share the experience.

We left the caravan park just after 9am and travelled up the number 1 highway again, heading for Nambour. The road through Brisbane was a breeze, we seemed to skirt around the city, although there was a toll of $2.20 at one point, there were no turns to make, and better still no traffic lights.

We turned off at the Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Drive and visited Australia Zoo. We’ve seen Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, on Jay Leno show many times and had to call in and visit his zoo. It was well worth the visit, we arrived at the zoo about 11.30am and didn’t leave until after 3pm and I could easily have spent more time there, although I walked Tony’s legs off. We got to see 2 shows, Crocs Live and the Tigers at the Tiger Temple, all the shows aim to give you an appreciation and understanding of the animals, and the need for conservation.

We arrived at the Nambour Rainforest Holiday Village and set up our tent before going out to get some groceries.

Saturday 7 May 2005 Day 15

We headed for Maroochydore today as the weather left a lot to be desired, it looked as though we were in for rain. Tony wanted to look at another Harley shop, so we did that and by the time we found it, it was raining. We then found the local shopping plaza and spent a couple of hours there, along with thousands of other people who must have had the same idea. We bought another antenna to try to get better TV reception on the laptop.

When we left the shopping plaza the rain had stopped so we went to the big pineapple. It cost $27 to do the tour, so we passed on that. We had a bit of a look around their retail store and had a pineapple parfait.

On our return to Nambour we decided to go down to town and get a newspaper. I thought that there may be a back way from town to return to the caravan park rather than making the sharp turn that was needed to enter the park from the highway. We finished up going on a long winding country ride; the Wang riders would have loved it. Along the way was a lookout that provided some great views, we took a couple of photos and headed home.

Spent the evening watching tele and surfing the net as usual, the TV antenna worked!

Sunday 8 May 2005 (Mother’s Day) Day 16

It’s raining again, or should that be still. I rang Mum for Mother’s Day then we wondered what we could do on such a rainy day. There are lots of tourist things to do but most cost lots of money and we’d already spent a bit going to Movie World and Australia Zoo.

So, like the intrepid “road warriors” (or should that read fools) that we are, we decided to go for a ride anyway. We put a fresh coat of polish on all our leathers, donned our wet weather pants and took off.

We thought that we’d do a tour of the Sunshine Coast, starting at Noosa and heading down to Caloundra along the coast road.

We stopped of at the Ginger Factory at Yandina where there were lots of little stores selling things catering tho the tourist trade. We were able to sample produce made with ginger and macadamia nuts. The gardens there are beautiful, with many ginger plants throughout, but the rainy weather wasn’t ideal for a stroll in the garden. Across the road from the Ginger Factory is a Macadamia Factory, I had a quick look there and we headed off for the coast.

Riding through Noosa the rain eased, so we thought we thought we’d continue on. It didn’t last long, the rain was pouring down so much that we couldn’t see the ocean that was right beside the road. We stopped at Peregian Beach to get out of the blinding rain. We went to a café and had some hot chips to warm us up, while waiting for the rain to ease.

Continuing on down the road we spotted a water fall gushing down the side of a mountain and stopped to photograph it. While we were stopped a girl was there doing the same thing. She told us that you normally wouldn’t see the water on the falls from where we were. She also told us that it was Mount Coolum, a rock, and the second largest monolith in Australia next to Ayers Rock.

We were absolutely saturated by this time and looking for the most direct way to get home.

Back at our tent we had wet clothing, jackets, helmets, boots and gloves everywhere, with not much room to move. But we’ve got tele to watch now, so we’re happy. Tomorrow we head further north and hopefully out of the rain. (Fingers crossed)
