Mountain Madness
Mountain
Madness is an annual bike show that is held at the Mountain View Hotel
on the Gillies Highway, at Gordonvale south of Cairns. The Gillies is a
popular road for motorcycles.
We camped by the Little Mulgrave River beside the pub and were told by Ross, who has been
camping beside there for 4 months that the water was ok for drinking. We had
breakfast, washed up and then went for a walk to see if anything had started
yet.
A
few bikes had arrived and the Cairns
Motorcycle Restorers Club had begun putting together their display of
old
bikes. We thought that seeing as it was a bike show we better bring the
bike up
to where the action was, but first it needed cleaning, we used water
from the river and a bit of polish and it looked heaps better..
All throughout the day bikes of all types
kept arriving. The organisers had set aside areas for each type of bike, sports
bikes, American, British, Japanese, European, ladies bikes, cruisers, there
were awards to be given for each category. As we were walking around looking at
the bikes we met up with some people that we’d met at the Stinger Rally.

Entrants competed in 5 events and were
awarded 1, 2, 3, or 4 points as to where they came in each heat.
The events were:
Slow Race – last across the line without
putting a foot on the ground is winner.
Dribble – entrants had to kick a ball in
and out between witches hats, trying to keep it under control
In the next race a pillion passenger had to
put tennis balls on top of 4 witches hats
The next event saw the pillion have to eat
a sausage that was suspended over the track, without using their hands and
while staying on the bike. One lady stuffed all the sausage into her mouth, a
guy in the crowd yelled “I’m in love”. She got to the end of the track and spat
it out saying “I don’t swallow”
In the last event the pillion had to throw
a water filled balloon over a suspended rope and catch it on the other side. It
finished up being a water fight.
There were men’s heats and ladies heats and
there was even one 7 year old, Kelly, on his bike but with no-one to compete
against he just displayed his riding skills, he loved the crowd and the crowd
loved him.

They fired up the band while the organisers
set up the burn out pad. A couple of guys from Extreme Machines had bikes to
compete in the burnouts. Quite a few tyres were blown throughout the day and
also one engine. Someone took his bike and sidecar on the burnout pad and the
mob from Custom Cycles even put a Harley on.
The band played a few more sets; people had
tea and partied on. We talked to a few people, mentioned that we were from
Wang, and one girl said “So am I, I’m Katie Hourigan” There are heaps of
Hourigans in the Wang area.
In the evening they started up the burn
outs again. The guys from Extreme Machines had flames shooting from their exhaust,
which makes for spectacular photos. One of the organisers, Les, took his bike,
named Street Fighter, onto the burnout pad and had all the pipes glowing red
hot and then his muffler caught on fire. (Boys and their toys!) He tried
putting it out with a t shirt and eventually used a can of beer to extinguish
it.

EXTINGUISHING THE FLAMES
The band played another set while the
organisers set up something they promised had never been done before, the grand
finale of the night.
Head to Head Burnout was the final event. A
local engineer developed a device where two bikes could be placed head to head
in a channel and the one with the most horsepower would push the other one,
almost like a tug of war, except instead of pulling you push. They did one with
bikes from a local racing group, both painted like the General Lee from Dukes
of Hazzard, but there were no takers from the crowd to compete. Someone in the
crowd was chanting Harley, Harley then we heard someone else most likely a
Harley owner call out go and buy one. Then it was time for the band to fire up
again and the party to continue. We sat and talked to a few people before
heading back to the tent about midnight.
We heard in the morning that there’d been a
wet shirt contest after we left. The music continued till about three in the
morning.
