Tuesday 29 November 2005 Day 222

A few people have told us that the tourist loop in Esperance is well worth a look. It takes you along the coast for a while past some spectacular scenery, the sea is beautiful shades of blue, edged by pristine white beaches, and then around past the Pink Lake, which today wasn’t pink at all.

After doing the Tourist Loop we stopped off in town for a look around. We went to the Tourist Info Centre that’s set in a little village of arts and craft shops.

In the town centre we pulled into a parking spot and heard a Harley fire up. We looked towards the petrol station where the sound come from and saw that it was Steve and Melanie. They’d stayed in Esperance a little longer than they thought they would because of the cold weather; there were a few things they wanted to do, but wanted a sunny day for it.

We had a look around the shops; there’s a Camping World here, that’s where we bought our tent, and we went in and asked what could be done about the troublesome zips. The man in the store was most helpful, he got on the phone to Primus, the company that supplies the tent we have, and they suggested we try new zip pulls, I didn’t know you could buy just the pull part. The store owner then told us where to find upholsterers and said if that didn’t do the trick to come back in and we’d work out what to do from there. Very good service!

After stopping at the upholsterers and getting the parts we needed we went back to the caravan park to fix the tent. We told the upholsterer the problem we were having and he straight away said we needed the new pullers. I thought that we’d need a whole new zip.

The weather deteriorated this afternoon; just as well we did our sightseeing this morning.  We got the tent fixed and updated the web site.

THE PINK LAKE FRAMED BY BAKSIAS

Wednesday 30 November 2005

In the early hours of the morning we woke to hear rain, when it was time to get up it was still raining.

We stayed around the tent in the morning hoping that by afternoon the rain would have gone.

After lunch it had cleared a bit and we decided to go for a ride to Cape Le Grand National Park, it’s supposed to be the number one attraction of Esperance and is located 54km from town.

The further from town we rode the worse the weather was and by the time we were almost to the park it was pouring down rain so we turned around and headed for home. There was one good thing that came from our ride, I managed to get some photos of emus in the wild, we passed a few lots of emus and also some kangaroos.

Back in town we went for a walk along Tanker Jetty. It’s a very long jetty that was once used for loading grain onto ships and is now used by fishermen and is a popular place to spot sea lions. I took the camera hoping that we’d see some sea lions but no such luck.

We called into the camping store to thank the owner for his advice about our tent; we seem to have fixed the problem. Then it was back to the caravan park to catch up with writing some postcards.

The caravan park we’re staying has trucks constantly rumbling by, I think it must be on the route between the wheat farms and wherever the farmers are sending the wheat to, perhaps the port for overseas. One truck after another goes by starting from about 5am and continuing till late.
