We went for a
ride in the Adelaide Hills; we weren’t the only ones with that idea, all day we
saw groups of people riding bikes around the winding hilly roads.
First stop on
the itinerary was Hahndorf a little town in the Adelaide Hills. We were there a
couple of years ago and it hasn’t changed. There are a lot of quaint old stone
buildings and there’s a distinct German feel to the town. We looked around the
galleries and gift shops that line the main street.
Next stop was to
be Melba’s Chocolate Factory in Woodside but we rode up and down the main
street and couldn’t find it, so we continued on our way.
We still need an
F for the ABCs so we went to Forest Range. While we were there we also went to a Cherry Farm, it was packed
with people. I went and picked some cherries, ate some while I was picking, and
then went to pay for them. You should have seen the queue; it must have been 50
people long and very slow moving. I stood in the queue for a while and then
gave up; I’d already had a feed of cherries while I was picking them.
Lobethal Market
was next on the agenda. We had a look around there; not a lot appealed to us
there. So far the day was a bit of a disappointment, the weather was cold and
dreary.
As we travelled
on our way to Birdwood we past Santa on his tractor and Frosty the Snowman,
both made by a clever farmer out of hay bales, very creative!
Finally
something that we both enjoyed, the National Motor Museum at
Birdwood. It’s an excellent museum with a terrific collection of cars, trucks,
buses, motorbikes and even caravans. You can see the vehicles that helped to shape both
Australia’s motoring and social history and discover
some of the stories behind them.
There’s a
hawkers van that used to travel to outback towns, it’s arrival was always
eagerly anticipated, for many communities it was their only chance to buy
supplies. The first car to cross the continent, a 1908 Talbot, is also on
display, it was driven from Adelaide to Darwin.
Last stop for
the day was the giant rocking horse at Gumeracha. After taking a couple of
photos and having a look around the shop which sells many hand crafted wooden
toys, we headed for home.
