Saturday 17 December 2005 Day 240

You’d think the caravan park that we’re staying at was in the middle of the bush, but it’s right in town, it’s in a valley with a little creek running through and lots of trees and ducks waddling by.

We went into the city to see if anyone could squeeze the bike in for a service, there are a couple of Harley mechanics around, only one authorised dealer and they couldn’t fit us in, but we thought maybe one of the others could. It seems there aren’t enough mechanics around; no one could fit the bike in for a service.

The Harley dealers did have a look at the rev counter, it’s not working, but they couldn’t figure out what’s wrong and didn’t have time to spend on it. We’re worried about getting it fixed while it’s still under warranty, but we found out that the bike wasn’t even built until July 2004 so we’ve still got a bit of time.

We had a look around Rundle Mall in the city, the weather seriously deteriorated, it was pouring rain and freezing cold by the time we were at the opposite end of the Mall too where the bike was.

After the city we went back to the caravan park for the evening where I planned out the next day’s trip.

Sunday 18 December 2005 Day 241

We went for a ride in the Adelaide Hills; we weren’t the only ones with that idea, all day we saw groups of people riding bikes around the winding hilly roads.

First stop on the itinerary was Hahndorf a little town in the Adelaide Hills. We were there a couple of years ago and it hasn’t changed. There are a lot of quaint old stone buildings and there’s a distinct German feel to the town. We looked around the galleries and gift shops that line the main street.

Next stop was to be Melba’s Chocolate Factory in Woodside but we rode up and down the main street and couldn’t find it, so we continued on our way.

We still need an F for the ABCs so we went to Forest Range. While we were there we also went to a Cherry Farm, it was packed with people. I went and picked some cherries, ate some while I was picking, and then went to pay for them. You should have seen the queue; it must have been 50 people long and very slow moving. I stood in the queue for a while and then gave up; I’d already had a feed of cherries while I was picking them.

Lobethal Market was next on the agenda. We had a look around there; not a lot appealed to us there. So far the day was a bit of a disappointment, the weather was cold and dreary.

As we travelled on our way to Birdwood we past Santa on his tractor and Frosty the Snowman, both made by a clever farmer out of hay bales, very creative!

Finally something that we both enjoyed, the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. It’s an excellent museum with a terrific collection of cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes and even caravans. You can see the vehicles that helped to shape both Australia’s motoring and social history and discover some of the stories behind them.

There’s a hawkers van that used to travel to outback towns, it’s arrival was always eagerly anticipated, for many communities it was their only chance to buy supplies. The first car to cross the continent, a 1908 Talbot, is also on display, it was driven from Adelaide to Darwin.

Last stop for the day was the giant rocking horse at Gumeracha. After taking a couple of photos and having a look around the shop which sells many hand crafted wooden toys, we headed for home.

Monday 19 December 2005 Day 242

We went back into the city again today; we needed to get the photos for the ABCs printed. We’ve still got a couple to go, J and X, but we thought we’d get some printed while we’re in the city and the prices are more competitive.

We also had a look at a shop that advertises in one of the bike magazines that Tony buys. They have clocks for bikes and sell them at a very reasonable price. We can’t afford one at the moment but we wanted to see if they had one that would fit the electra glide. There is one and we can order it online when we’re ready to purchase.

The afternoon was spent just relaxing around the caravan park.
