       2009 Canadian National Championships - July 11-19 - Trois-Rivieres, Quebec

The roster for the 2009 Canadian National Championships has been selected and although small, the team is full of experience. Nick Buckle (Springdale) will be the lone U15 player attending the tournament as he plays in his 3rd National Championships in as many years.
The Boys U18 is made up of U18 Provincial Champion Zack Clarke (Springdale) who will be playing in his second Nationals, his first was in Edmonton in 2007. Clarke will be joined by the only first time player on the team Chris Emmens (Goose Bay), who is the first Labrador player to be a part of a provincial team since the 2003 Canada Winter Games in New Brunswick. After a day off on July 16th Clarke, Emmens and Buckle will join Adam Le Drew (C.B.S.) for the Senior competition.

La Coupe Letendre - May 16-17 - Laval, Quebec

The Newfoundland and Labrador team of Nick Buckle (Springdale), Mitch Haynes (C.B.S.), Brent Hunter (Springdale), and Adam Le Drew (C.B.S.) attended La Coupe Letendre in Laval, Quebec this past weekend. The team got of to a slow start on day one with tight loses to Montreal, Drummondville, and Sherbrook. Day 2 started off much better with a 7-2 win over the host team Laval. That win was enough to put the team in the crossover round where they played Toronto. The team once again suffered another thight loss after jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the match. Out of all the 54 singles matches played by the team
just 18 were won or lost in 3 games. Overall our players managed to come away with experience and a good few rating points, Buckle finished with a record of 2-13 with both wins being over much higher rated players, Haynes finished 4-11 also with his wins being over higher rated players, the same went for Hunter who finsihed 3-12, and Le Drew who was 6-3. For Nick, Mitch and Brent who are all still U18 this tournament was a very good tune up for the National Championships which are less than 2 months away.

        NCCP Coaching Clinic - March 14-15 - C.B.S.

This past weekend, National Team Head Coach Marles Martin and Table Tennis Canada Projects Coordinator Mireille Tallon were in C.B.S. to put off a NCCP coaching clinic for coaches from all across the province. The clinic was held at Villanova Junior High School in C.B.S. Coaches were taught the Introduction to Competition where they learned many components to coaching such as teaching technique to young players, biomechanical movements, making ethical descisions, planning a practice and much more. The event was a very big success as we had coaches from all different parts of the province. Martin and Tallon put off 4 other clinics across the country in Vancouver, Montral, Toronto and Halifax, out of those 4 only Montral had more coaches in attendance than our clinic. Coaches were in attendance from Churchill Falls, Pasadena, Springdale, Bay Roberts, C.B.S., Paradise, and St.John's. The NLTTA would like to thank Marles and Mireille for their time and effort in the clinic and hopefully they will be back to give more clinics in the future. This is the kickoff to the busiest part of the season for us after a slow winter as we have the NLTTA Closed Next weekend and then continue preparations for the Atlantic Championships which we are to host in early May, and then training is to begin for the National Championships in July.

              Paradise Recreation Center Opens

On Thursday June 5th, the Paradise Recreation Center officially opened. On hand at the event was the Mayor of Paradise Ralph Wiseman along with the town councillors, NTV was also broadcasting live at the event. The NLTTA aslo had a number of representatives at the opening including president Brian Ash, Vice-President Merv Greenham, and Paradise residents Tony Gosse and Dean Gosse. As well, CTTA president and St.John's resident Bruce Burton was also present. The building will be the home of the new Paradise Table Tennis Club starting next season. It will become the 3rd club in the Metro Area joining C.B.S. and St.John's. Many players who play in the C.B.S. and St.John's leagues are Paradise residents, which includes both juniors and seniors, with this Club being active, these players will not have to travel to play in a league. The Town of Paradise is also located next to the City of Mount Pearl where there is no club currently running, this may also provide the opportunity for Mount Pearl residents to play Table Tennis. The NLTTA hopes that this venue could possible become host to the NL STIGA NTV Closed next Spring, also, next season the Atlantic Championships are back in our province and the venue is also being considered to host this major event. Paradise is a part of the Mount Pearl/South region which did not have a team in the 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games, hopefully this club will generate enough young interest to provide players for the regional team in the 2010 games.

         2008 Atlantic Championships - Charlottetown, P.E.I.

The 2008 Atlantic Championships took place this weekend in Charlottetown, P.E.I. This win came in style when at 10-9 in the 5th game for Merv and Eric, the P.E.I. team served long to Eric who pivoted and looped the ball by the awaiting player to win the gold medal. Merv also played extremely well in singles this weekend winning the 21-40 age group as well as making it all the way to the Semi-Finals in Championship Mens before losing a very hard fought match in the 5th game. Although their was a storm on the east coast which prevented some of the provinces top players from making the long drive across the island, the tournament still managed to run very smoothly and see some very entertaining matches. One of this seasons top stories so far has been Brent Hunter (Springdale), who continued to impress in his first competitive season as a U15. Hunter placed 3rd in Boys U15 this time adding to his 2nd place finishes in the Central Open and Eastern Open.
