What is Jiu-Jitsu?
" Ju-Jitsu can be defined as various armed or unarmed fighting systems which can be applied against armed or unarmed aggressors. It has its historical roots in ancient Japan.

It is a "no holds barred" type of fighting method where winning at any cost is the rule. Its methods include kicking, striking, throwing, choking, joint locking, and the use of weapons, as well as holding and tying an enemy. Atemi, the method of striking the weak points (kyusho), is an important aspect of the system.

Generally, Ju-Jitsu is not a major offensive art. However, it has both offensive and defense techniques. It is naive to restrict techniques to defensive tactics alone, because a strong offense is at times your best defense.

Combat Ju-Jitsu was always a secondary system to the Japanese Samurai; it complemented his sword technique. Kenjutsu (sword fighting) had close-in empty hand techniques before that art became known as Ju-Jitsu.

The two Japanese characters for Ju-Jitsu give some insight into this martial art.

"Ju" is a character meaning pliable, submissive, adaptable, or yielding. The most common translation of "Ju" as "gentle" is usually incorrectly perceived by the Western mind as "soft" or "weak". The techniques are not gentle, but are better described as being flexible. An enemy who attacks with powerful, focused technique will not be turned aside with gentle technique.

When the suffix "Jutsu" or "Jitsu" is included in a fighting method's name, it denotes a fighting art. These fighting arts were used by Japanese warriors to develop complete fighting skills for use in combat. Some examples are kenjutsu (sword), kyujutsu (archery), bo-jitsu (stick), bajutsu (horsemanship), sojutsu (spear), and ju-jitsu. "

Nisei Kito Ryu Jiu-jitsu ( NKJJ ) is a style that combines the old principles and techniques of the ancient schools and combines it with the training strategy developed by Jigoro Kano (Founder of Kodokan Judo). NKJJ is the next step in the evolution of Jiu-jitsu.

The emphasis of NKJJ is on self-defense. The system is ever evolving to incorporate techniques and strategies that are effective in a real world engagement. NKJJ is a comprehensive system, it addresses all aspects of inter-pesonal combat. Equal attention is paid to standing and ground fighting techniques. Techniques address all aspects of an engagement, using strikes, kicks, throws, chokes, joint locks and anything else that will allow a practioner to go home safely. NKJJ prepares the student to face both armed and unarmed opponents.The style of Nisei Kito Ryu Jiu-jitsu is a highly versitile fighting system that is practical and highly effective. The unique thing about NKJJ is the way it is taught. Almost all the techniques are testable in a freestyle sparring session (Randori) to show the student and the instructors that the practioner will be able to call on the system in a SELF-DEFENSE situation.

“Hanshi” Serge is the founder of Nisei Kito Ryu system. The many techniques that he learned over the years from his father and various instructors are the foundation of Nisei Kito Ryu, these techniques were formulated into the present system we study today. this system should not be confused with the Kito Ryu of old. Hence the word “Nisei” was used to distinguish it from Kito Ryu. There Are eight levels of rank before one reaches the first degree black belt. The juniors are ranked slightly different.

 

Nisei Kito Ryu is practical, common sense, workable, self-defense. The techniques taught are throwing, joint locks, strangles, holding, striking and kicking. Ground work is nothing new for this system. Nisei Kito Ryu students are quite comfortable fighting on the ground and have been doing this type of fighting for a very long time. A traditional dojo, the student learns discipline and self-confidence. The student learns to  respect his self as well as others, to recognize his weakness and to strengthen them, not only to perfect his techniques but to improve his inner self.
