Rose Tyler is an ordinary 19-year-old shop assistant in London, whose world changes forever when she is attacked by murderous shop mannequins and saved by a mysterious stranger calling himself the Doctor. Rose is full of questions - and is out of a job. Who is the Doctor, and what's the Blue Box that is bigger on the inside than the out? And why will she endanger the lives the of those she talks to, if she tells them about the 'living plastic'?

The time travellers team up with a world-weary Charles Dickens to investigate Gabriel Sneed, the local undertaker and his servant girl Gwyneth, and find themselves having to deal with the ghostly Gelth.

The Ninth Doctor takes Rose back to 21st century London, and they soon realise that instead of being gone twelve hours - it's been twelve months. Rose is unable to tell her mother, who has no concept of aliens, about her experiences with the doctor; but she and the Doctor are just in time to witness a spaceship crashing into the River Thames, triggering a worldwide state of alert and the closing off of the city. As the Doctor investigates the survivor of the crash, Rose finds problems closer to home.
