Overview
Northamptonshire has various components around the county, in the main are ELECO, GEC, PHILIPS, URBIS and THORN BETA. Prior to these lanterns were REVO, STANTON and STAVELY COLUMNS and CU PHOSCO. I have managed to compile a photographic collection, including archive footage from local publications and put them together on this site.
1982 was a big year for the County Council, when the county's streetlighting was given a major overhaul. The streets and major roads were upgraded and converted in the main towns and districts street lighting, replacing the old GEC florescent's to ELECO, CU PHOSCO'S to THORN BETA 5 as well as PHILIPS MI50 supported by a metal swan bracket. Some rural areas were left out of the programme as this was not pheasable.
The County Council have an objective to re-use street lighting as and whenever possible, where lighting on main roads have been upgraded.
PHILIPS MA90's/SGS's and WRTL Industria are slowly replacing the latter and engineers are currently replacing the Stewarts and Lloyds and concrete CU columns in favour of CORUS steel columns, 8M, 12M, and HOCKEY STICK, manufactured locally in Corby (Formally Stewarts and Lloyds and British Steel before their merger with Corus in 1999).
The Highway's Agency have now taken responsibility of the street lighting on the A45 dual carriageway, and along stretches of the A14, M1, M40 and M45. The latter for maintenance was either ABB or ATKINS. A new consortium for highways and street lighting was introduced by the county council in April 2007 who took over the operations from Atkins, their facilities and staff. PFI credits have now been awarded and experimental street lighting is starting to appear.
