China and the New World Order:

How Entrepreneurship, Globalization and Borderless Business Are Reshaping China and the World

By George Zhibin Gu
Fultus, October 2006; 248 pages

China has traveled light years during the past three decades. After Mao Zedong died in 1976 and the Chinese people step by step became freer to cultivate their entrepreneurial inclinations to improve their lives, China has seemed to be a film spinning ahead in fast-forward. Images flash before the eyes, but before you can really focus they have been replaced by others and yet others.

Vast Changes in China

On his last visit to China in 2003, Cuba's dictator Fidel Castro blinked and openly wondered where he had landed, things were so different from his previous trip several years earlier. But others too have found the images of the changing China a challenge to assimilate and interpret. Outsiders often look toward the Middle Kingdom and ask, what is going on? What does it all mean? Is all of this good for the Chinese people, and for the rest of us?

The China Deng Xiaoping took over in the late 1970s was staggering and moribund at home and a pariah worldwide in the wake of the nation-devouring recriminations and outrages of the Cultural Revolution. Whether from conviction or panic to preserve the discredited Communist Party, or both, Deng opened the door to some truly revolutionary economic change, and the spin-off over time has gone far beyond the economic field.

One critical step in his campaign occurred in 1980 when he created several Special Economic Zones (SEZs), which are geographically confined laboratory-cities for experimenting with market-oriented economic reforms as well as engagement with the outside world. The most important of these SEZs was down south, just across the border from the then-British-controlled Hong Kong, a place Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman has often called the freest market in the world. The name of the overnight city that sprang up was Shenzhen.

No tiny region on earth has ever attracted so much foreign direct investment in such a short time as Shenzhen, over U.S.$60 billion. Never has any city in so short a time attracted so many people who were not just fleeing hard times in rural regions but actually all fired up to succeed.

The city has grown an average of about 27% annually since it became a SEZ, and many of the 12 million who now live there have prospered. Many others, often in their teens and twenties, have worked very long hours under miserable conditions and barely survived, though they usually earned a little more than they ever had back home in their villages. Thus Shenzhen is China writ small, though conditions are at very different stages throughout the vast country.

George Zhibin Gu was one of over 12 million Chinese to move to Shenzhen, the epicenter of change. He was born in Xian, the heartland of vast expanses of Chinese history and governments, and got his university training in Nanjing and the United States. He proceeded to move into the most anti-Maoist of all professions, namely investment banking and business consulting.

Unique Guide

No one I know of has come so close to capturing the spirit and meaning of an explosively changing China as Gu. When you read about Shenzhen and the other topics of this book, ranging from bank and stock market reform to new Chinese multinationals on the world stage to the need for a federation of the mainland and Taiwan, you are as good as parachuting into Chinese cities, businesses, sweatshops, and policy discussions. You become immersed in the tiny but persistent realities of individual and group successes and failures, in the battles over reform, money, and power, and you feel the elation and frustration of the Chinese people in their widely varying human conditions.

You also encounter the global issues raised by China's rise that affect people worldwide almost as much as they do the Chinese themselves. Even people around the world who can hardly find China on the map know that the civilization has a very long history and ancient traditions. Many know that it has not done well in recent decades, even centuries, but that things are changing.

An old joke used to be that the only poor Chinese in the world were the Chinese who lived in China because there government repression sapped them of the will and opportunity to really better their lives and thus the conditions and prospects of the country. This is no longer true, though many remain poor. Today, upward mobility is becoming a reality inside the nation.

But the outside world has more direct experience with the overseas Chinese. Chinese who moved or escaped abroad, whether to Hong Kong or Singapore, to the United States or Panama, were often highly successful in small and large businesses and other professions demanding a dedication to education, hard work, and raising one's status in life. Throughout the English-speaking world today, and in some respects this includes China itself, we find Chinese students working 18-hour days and excelling in every field they enter.

Key Challenges Ahead

Despite China's astonishing and continuous progress from the end of the Mao era to today, major challenges remain. Gu often focuses on bureaucracies, which, as he asserts, essentially frame China's politics, society, business, and economy.

China has relied on bureaucracies for millennia, and Mao picked up where the earlier emperors had left off. He created the largest bureaucracy in the history of humankind and one that took control of every aspect of every person's life everywhere in the country. And though during the Cultural Revolution Mao and the Gang of Four killed hundreds of thousands and demolished much of what the Communist government up to then had created, the bureaucracy, in modified form, persists in power to this day.

Gu argues that even though government leaders have permitted great change, which originally flowed from the initiative of some peasants and others shortly after Mao's death, this bureaucracy is the chief impediment to completing the revolution. It seeks to retain power, setting up one of the ironies of the Mao legacy.

The Great Helmsman used to urge people to strive tirelessly to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds by referring to the ancient Chinese fable of the Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains.

Now the mountain that stands in the way of completing the current and real revolution in China, Gu argues, is above all the corrupt and self-serving bureaucracy. Though the government has allowed economic reforms, it still tries to be both "player" and "referee" in the marketplace.

Seen through the lenses of Chinese history, truly revolutionary change is indeed under way throughout the country, but it can be completed only through a drastic curtailment of the continuing power of the government over so many aspects of national and daily life. The change now must come through ever-greater individual private initiative, an increasingly open society, and international involvement.

Over the past quarter century China has awakened and, as Napoleon warned, it is and will continue shaking the world. But is this a good thing for China, and for the world?

Gu argues that this phenomenal growth of China, this awakening, is not something for the world to fear, but rather an opportunity and also a challenge. He argues that progress in the modern world is not patented by the currently developed countries, but available to all peoples who are willing and able to work hard for it. The developed world itself will benefit from the advancement of the late developers.

If you want to immerse yourself in the awakening of modern China, take George Gu with you as your guide. With him along you are not leaping dizzily into the frames of the fast-forwarding story, for you have an experienced and articulate guide who fills in facts and at least as importantly adds insights into what is happening, why it matters, and what it feels like to be there in the middle of it all.

I have traveled extensively in China for many years and I relive many things that I have seen and heard and felt over the decades in every page of Gu's book. And I learn a lot that is new to me too.

Demonology 101: When Governments Invite Dark Dominion

Years ago I remember watching when for the first time in history Catholic authorities allowed network television to broadcast an exorcism. Permission was given to ABC’s “20/20” to cover the event, and on April 5, 1991 the ritual was televised. The extraordinary moment was a first for network programming, yet something about the show caused my thoughts to wander. In the past I had been involved with cases of exorcism (on two published accounts I and others actually witnessed ‘existence manifestations’ outside our understanding of physics), but now I questioned if perhaps we were missing something bigger—a comparison between what leads to individual demonic possession and a wider cultural phenomenon known in fashionable theology as “geographical demonic strongholds.”

I soon began to question that if personal behavior was one route to opening doors to diabolical invasion on an individual level, might nations similarly come under siege to a larger “hive” of nefarious power through collective behavioral or gestured invitation to evil by those having geopolitical authority? Most adults are aware that if people who preside over legislative bodies sense public apathy, they may abandon their responsibility to govern for the good of the people and in worse case scenarios begin using their positions in power for their own elitist or even occultist aspirations. If this is allowed to continue via the public and/or lawmakers turning a blind eye, the result can be, according to demonology and select case studies, the regional increase of evil supernaturalism.

To some believers, the origins of this phenomenon began in the distant past when “a fire in the minds” of angels caused Lucifer to exalt himself above the good of God’s Creation. The once glorified spirit was driven by an unequivocal thirst to rule, conquer, and dominate. His fall spawned similar lust among his followers, which continues today among human agents of dark power who guard a privileged “cause and effect” relationship between invasion of supernaturalism and the opportunity for lordship over societies.

The objectives of the occult masters and the very real forces they serve is overlooked by average citizens, yet according to sacred texts a collaboration exists between such unregenerate social architects and fallen angels. If the electorate becomes bewitched of this truth, humans in league with demons can increase their control of the machine of municipal government through sophisticated networks of both visible and invisible principalities. This happens subconsciously or intentionally among those vulnerable to the sinister dark plan.

Multitudes may never comprehend this fact, and that is why some cannot see beyond “flesh and blood” or hold as real the hungry ambitions of “principalities… powers… rulers of darkness… and spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph. 6:12). Nevertheless in my opinion a complete evaluation of recent American history must take into account not only the visible agents of government, but the significant interaction between spiritual and human personalities.

Among the great religions, there is the belief that three sources of spiritual power can affect nations: 1) divine influence, proceeding forth from the domain of God; 2) satanic influence, coming from the sphere of Satan; and 3) human influence. This third influence, being neutral, is available as a conduit for good or evil as it submits to divine or satanic control.

Throughout history, there have been governments and leaders that resisted evil and adhered to the statutes of God. These spoiled the strategies of corrupt minions, both visible and invisible, and made possible the blessing of those nations.

Conversely, there have been times in history when bureaucracy turned its back on higher law, opening the door for “evil angels” (Ps. 78:49) to pervade the direction of society. These were times when darkness and Machiavellian trickery took root in the mindset of the majority, and systems of government and philosophy were influenced by fiendish unseen counterparts.

To the ancient city of Corinth, a city known for its pride, ostentation, and lasciviousness (which not only was tolerated, but consecrated through the worship of Venus), Paul said to the Church, “the god of this world [Satan] hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…” (2 Cor. 4:4).

Supernaturalism ruling from the air above Corinth blinded the minds of Corinthians until the latter were incapable of perceiving their moral and social decay.

It’s interesting that the Apostle would send this warning to the city of Corinth—a Greek prototype of America’s wealth, military strength, and great mental activity (1). Outwardly, one would have thought these educated Gnostics were well equipped intellectually to understand the spiritual ramifications and social significance of their actions. Yet, Paul said their minds had been blinded by the god of this world. Their superior human knowledge, though impressive to intelligentsia, had not protected the Corinthians from the subtle influences filling the atmosphere around them.

It is within this unseen arena of malevolent rulers that some men are organized. Under dark influence, they become orchestrated within a great evil system (or empire) described in various passages as a satanic order. In more than thirty important biblical texts, the Greek New Testament employs the term kosmos, which describes an invisible order or “government behind government.” It is here that human ego—separated from God—becomes hostile to the service of others while viewing mankind as a personal commodity.

From kosmos, the “old ones” master the air in and around willing men’s minds. The deceiving spirits, called “archons” and “kosmokrators” in the Book of Ephesus, are rulers of darkness who work in and through their human political counterparts, commanding spirits of lesser rank until every level of earthly government can be touched by their influence.

According to the Bible, it is this dominion that is at odds with the communities of the world. With vivid testimony to this, Satan offered to Jesus all the power and glory of the governments of this world. Satan said, “All this power [control] will I give thee, and the glory of them [earthly cities]: for that is delivered unto me: and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine” (Luke 4:6-7).

Jesus declined this dominionist offer from the “prince of the powers of the air.”

Sadly, others have not.

Therefore this is a picture of a world system average people never comprehend. If most of humanity could see through the veil into the invisible world that inhabits this planet, they would find a world alive with good against evil. It is a place where the prize is the souls of men, and where legions war for control of its cities and people. The end game for the darkest of these powers—together with their human counterparts—is to stand in the place of God, incarnated and ruling the nations with an iron fist.

The connection between such occult elite and the Luciferian ambitions can be viewed in the history of secret societies.

Albert Pike, a leading Freemason and genius who lived during the 19th Century is famous for his Masonic handbook, “Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Rite of Freemasonry.” Pike was a 33rd degree Mason, head of the Ancient Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and Grand Master of the Order of the Palladium (Sovereign Council of Wisdom). On page 321 of Morals and Dogma, Pike speaks of the value of Lucifer to the goals of the order:

"Lucifer, the Light-bearer! Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darkness! Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual, or selfish Souls? Doubt it not!"

Masons publically distance themselves from this Luciferian connection, arguing that Pike was referring to the plant Venus, and not Satan. They say that because Venus is seen on the horizon before Dawn, it is cast as the herald of light and allegorically the bringer of knowledge (gnosis) for Freemasons. Yet Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love—a “she” and not the “he” from Pike’s writing. Furthermore, Pike certified his thoughts concerning this “he” earlier in Morals and Dogma, saying, “The true name of Satan, the Kabalists say, is that of Yahveh reversed; for Satan is not a black god,” [page 102].

Thus if Satan is not “a black god” and “Lucifer” is “he who bears the light,” Pike is clearly referring to the personage identified in the Bible as the fallen angel who ultimately became the Creator’s nemesis.

In 1954, William Guy Carr, a distinguished Canadian naval officer claimed that a conspiracy for world domination had been spelled out in a private letter from Pike to the director of the Illuminati, Giuseppe Mazzini. The letter detailed three world wars that would be machinated by the global occult elite, leading to the demise of Christianity and to the rise of Luciferianism.

In the introduction to his book, “Pawns in the Game,” Carr wrote:

“World War Three is to be fomented by using the differences the agentur of the Illuminati stir up between the Political Zionists and the leaders of the Moslem world. The war is to be directed in such a manner that Islam (the Arab World including Mohammedanism) and Political Zionism (including the State of Israel) will destroy themselves while at the same time the remaining nations, once more divided against each other on this issue, will be forced to fight themselves into a state of complete exhaustion physically, mentally, spiritually and economically. Can any unbiased and reasoning person deny that the intrigue now going on in the Near, Middle, and Far East is designed to accomplish this devilish purpose?

"On August 15, 1871, Pike told Mazzini that after World War Three is ended, those who aspire to undisputed world domination will provoke the greatest social cataclysm the world has ever known. We quote his written words (taken from the letter catalogued in the British Museum Library, London, Eng.):

“‘We shall unleash the Nihilists and Atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will be from that moment without compass (direction), anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view, a manifestation which will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time’” (3).

It is held that Carr learned about the alleged Pike letter from Cardinal Caro y Rodriguez of Santiago, Chile, author of “The Mystery of Freemasonry Unveiled.” Those who hold the documents of Carr as authentic claim that Pike, Giuseppe and other founders of the occult orders developed the grand scheme to establish a One World Order from information given to them by “spirit guides.” The three machinated world wars would ultimately destroy man’s faith in God and establish the earthly throne of Lucifer. While the authorship of the Pike letter remains disputed, the passages from Carr have been in circulation for over 50 years and in this sense is prophetic in its vision of a third world war scenario when compared to global events initiated in Washington, D.C. this decade involving the Middle East and the so-called war on terror.

Recent examples of coded language from high ranking members of Congress and the U.S. President also add to the imprint and suspicion of a global master plan spelled out in the Pike letter.

We have noted before some instances of presidential language that seemed designed to convey secret messages to select members of his audience. Yet the practice of the “double coding” word craft as a strategy for secretly appealing to particular people is not limited to George Bush. When Rep. Nancy Pelosi on January 4, 2007 assumed her roll as speaker of the House at the opening of the 110th Congress, she stated that the founding fathers were so confident in “the America they were advancing, they put on the seal, the great seal of the United States, ‘novus ordo seclorum’—a new order for the centuries.”

The new speaker did not go into detail as to why the phrase “Novus Ordo Seclorum” was considered important dialectic during this momentous changeover of the control of congress. Nor did she dare to add why “Novus Ordo Seclorum” exists beneath the unfinished pyramid and the All Seeing Eye (or Eye of Horus) in the Great Seal of the United States. Her reference may have been a simple coincidence, but the origins of the motto “Novus Ordo Seclorum” and the use of it in this historic speech was interesting when cast against recent world events.

The term “Novus Ordo Seclorum” (A New Order of the Ages) was adapted by Charles Thomson in 1782 when designing the Great Seal of the United States. According to the official record, Thomson created the phrase from inspiration he found in a line in Virgil’s Eclogue IV: "Magnus ab integro seclorum nascitur ordo" [Virgil's Eclogue IV (line 5)], the interpretation of the original Latin being, “and the majestic roll of circling centuries begins anew.”

Ironically, Christians since the middle ages have held that the Cumaean Sibyl of Virgil’s Ecologue IV prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ and that it was this arrival of the Savior that gave rise to “the majestic roll of circling centuries begins anew,” or New Order of the Ages. Virgil himself was believed to be a prophet in this regard, and that is why Dante Alighieri selected him as his guide through the underworld in The Divine Comedy. The Cumaean Sibyl is also prominently featured alongside the Old Testament prophets in Michelangelo’s paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Some say this fact played a role in Thomson’s “inspiration” for “Novus Ordo Seclorum” taken from Virgil’s Ecologue IV. Yet upon reading Virgil’s text, the divine son that comes of the Sibyl’s prophecy is a savior unknown to Biblical theology. “He” is to be spawned of “a new breed of men sent down from heaven” who receive “the life of gods, and see Heroes with gods commingling.” According to the Sibyl’s prediction, this “messiah” would be the son of Jupiter and come when the Roman god Saturn returned to reign over the earth in a new golden age (the Novus Ordo Seclorum), when Apollo rises again through mystical “life” power given to him from the gods.

From the beginning of the poem we read (4):

“Now the last age by Cumae's Sibyl sung Has come and gone, and the majestic roll Of circling centuries begins anew: Justice returns, returns old Saturn's reign, With a new breed of men sent down from heaven. Only do thou, at the boy's birth in whom The iron shall cease, the golden race arise, Befriend him, chaste Lucina; 'tis thine own Apollo reigns. …

“He shall receive the life of gods, and see Heroes with gods commingling, and himself Be seen of them, and with his father's worth Reign o'er a world…

“Assume thy greatness, for the time draws nigh, Dear child of gods, great progeny of Jove! See how it totters- the world's orbed might, Earth, and wide ocean, and the vault profound, All, see, enraptured of the coming time! Ah! might such length of days to me be given, And breath suffice me to rehearse thy deeds, Nor Thracian Orpheus should out-sing me then, Nor Linus, though his mother this, and that His sire should aid- Orpheus Calliope, And Linus fair Apollo. Nay, though Pan, With Arcady for judge, my claim contest, With Arcady for judge great Pan himself Should own him foiled, and from the field retire. Begin to greet thy mother with a smile, O baby-boy! ten months of weariness For thee she bore: O baby-boy, begin! For him, on whom his parents have not smiled, Gods deem not worthy of their board or bed.”

According to the Sibyl, the New Order of the Ages occurs when a special “son” is born on earth, a new messiah who comes of “a new breed of men sent down from heaven” when “heroes” and “gods” are blended together. This sounds eerily similar to what the Watchers did during the creation of Nephilim, to what scientists are doing this century through the creation of transgenic human-animal chimeras, and to what the Bible actually describes as the Antichrist being the “son” of perdition” (2 Th 2:3, Apoleia, from which we make Apollyon, the demon destroyer). Note the similarity of the names Apollo and Apollyon.

Has the Novus Ordo Seclorum prophecy of a reincarnated pagan god leading to a New World Order been fulfilled? Is this a prognostication of a future time? What about recent references by congressmen and President’s to government via supernatural influence? Are these things connected?

Biblical demonologists believe in the near future a man of superior intelligence, wit, charm, and diplomacy will emerge on the world scene as a savior. He will seemingly possess a transcendent wisdom that enables him to solve problems and offer solutions to many of today’s most perplexing issues. His popularity will be widespread, and his fans will include young and old, religious and non-religious, male and female. Talk show hosts will interview his colleagues, news anchors will cover his movements, scholars will applaud his uncanny ability at resolving what has escaped the rest of us, and the poor will bow down at his table. He will, in all human respects, appeal to the best idea of society. But his profound comprehension and irresistible presence will be the result of an invisible network of thousands of years of collective knowledge. He will represent the embodiment of a very old super-intellegent spirit. As Jesus Christ was the "seed of the woman" (Gen. 3:15), he will be the "seed of the serpent." Though his arrival in the form of a man was foretold by numerous Scriptures, the broad masses will not recognize him for what he is: paganism’s ultimate incarnation—the "beast" of Revelation 13:1.

It’s been assumed for centuries that prerequisite for the coming of Antichrist will be a "revived" world order—an umbrella under which national boundaries dissolve, and ethnic groups, ideologies, religions, and economics from around the world, orchestrate a single and dominant sovereignty. At the head of the utopian administration, a single personality will surface. He will appear to be a man of distinguished character, but will ultimately become "a king of fierce countenance" (Dan. 8:23). With imperious decree he will facilitate a one-world government, a universal religion, and global socialism. Those who refuse his New World Order will inevitably be imprisoned or destroyed until at last he exalts himself "above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he, as God, sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God" (2 Thess. 2:4).

For many years the idea of such an Orwellian society where one-world government oversees the smallest details of our lives and where human liberties are abandoned was considered anathema. The concept that rugged individualism could be sacrificed for an anesthetized universal harmony was repudiated by America’s greatest minds.

Then, in the 1970’s, things began to change.

Following a call by Nelson Rockefeller for the creation of a "new world order," (5) presidential candidate Jimmy Carter campaigned, saying, "We must replace balance of power politics with world order politics." (6) Evidently he struck a chord with world leaders. During the first war in Iraq, President George Herbert Walker Bush continued the one-world dirge by announcing over national television that, "a New World Order" had arrived.

Following the initial broadcast, President Bush addressed the Congress and made the additional comment:

“What is at stake is more than one small country [Kuwait], it is a big idea—a new world order, where diverse nations are drawn together in common cause to achieve the universal aspirations of mankind: peace and security, freedom, and the rule of law. Such is a world worthy of our struggle, and worthy of our children’s future!” (7)

Ever since the President’s astonishing newscast, a parade of political and religious leaders have discharged a profusion of coded language aimed at implementing the goals of the New World Order. Concurrent with the political aspects of the New World Order is the syncretistic and spiritual goals of occult society. The blending of politics and spirituality harmonizes perfectly with the ideas of an end-time marriage of governmental policy and religious creed as was prophesied in the Bible. To that end the tools necessary for paganism’s ultimate incarnation—the god-king of the Great Tribulation (Satan in flesh)—are in place. The worship of the "gods" has been popularized through modern mysticism. The dominionist agenda of governing by "divine representation" through theocratic-pacifism is being constructed. Biotechnology has given rise to transhumanist values seeking to redesign what it means to be human, and the earth’s masses stand at the brink of a decisive moment in time.

At the core of the emerging conspiracy a leader of indescribable brutality is scheduled to appear. He will make the combined depravities of Antiochus Epiphenes, Hitler, Stalin, and Genghis Khan, all of whom were types of the Antichrist, look like child’s play. He will raise his fist, "speaking great things.... in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven" (Rev. 13:5-6). He will cause that as many as will not worship his image to be killed" (Rev. 13:15), and he will implement a series of policies that systematically degrade God-given civil liberties until “he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (Rev. 13:16-17).

The symbols and rituals of the occult masters—the Masons, Illumninatists, Bilderbergers and Bohemians—combine to harmonize so completely with recent U.S. administration dialectics and policy changes as to be mathematically improbable of chance. They point, as does the Sibyl’s conjure, to a future time when the occultist’s meaning of the Angel in the Whirlwind, the rise of Imperial Luciferianism, and a “new breed of human” are made plain.

CURRENTLY READING  ... 'TALES OF THE DYING EARTH' BY JACK VANCE [Comprising 'The Dying Earth', 'The Eyes of the Overworld', 'Cugel's Saga' and 'Rhialto the Marvellous']

I cannot in all honesty say that Jack Vance is my favorite author, but he can be vastly entertaining. I picked the above titled book up the other day and have already reread the first novel, 'The Dying Earth'. I could only ever had read it once before because I didn't remember it. It is however outstanding in many ways.

Written in 1950 it's extravagant terminology paints a much clearer picture [when you read between the lines] of real magic, both that condemned [manual arts] and that supreme [verbal arts]. Hence much of the effective magic in these tales is of SPOKEN SPELLS and CURSES.

This is reason enough to comment. But it also gives me the opportunity to recommend my favorite Jack Vance novel, 'The Languages of Pao'. For anyone interested in how language influences our thinking, this is a key book.

Suffice it to say that you're not really an SF fan if you haven't read any of his books.

Louisiana Sliding Into Gulf, Says Report

small text
large text

Jan. 2, 2007 — A new report by scientists studying Louisiana's sinking coast says the land here is not just sinking, it's sliding ever so slowly into the Gulf of Mexico.

The new findings may add a kink to plans being drawn up to build bigger and better levees to protect this historic city and Cajun bayou culture.

If the land is shifting — even slightly — engineers may need to take that into consideration as they build new levees and draw lines across the coast to identify areas that should and shouldn't be protected.

Fires in Victoria, Australia

Fires in Victoria continued to rage on December 20, 2006. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra shows smoke swirling over the state and spreading westward over Melbourne. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. These fires have been burning since the beginning of the month, as dry, hot, windy conditions prevailed across the region. Although this part of Victoria is largely national parks and other natural areas, there are many small towns and communities scattered throughout the region that have been endangered by the fires.

The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the area in a variety of resolutions and formats.

Drought in Southeastern Australia

Deep red paints the coastal mountains of southeastern Australia, hangs over the continent’s arid interior, and dots much of the rest of the land in this image, indicating that unusually high temperatures reigned in November 2006. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the monthly average temperature for the country hit a record high in November. The average temperature for the continent was 2.11 degrees Celsius warmer than average, with local temperatures rising more than 4 degrees C above average for the month in places.

These abnormally high air temperatures are reflected in the extreme land surface temperatures shown in this image. The land is usually much warmer to the touch than the temperature recorded by a thermometer hanging above the ground, and so, during November, land surface temperatures in Australia were as much as 10 degrees Celsius above a five-year average. The greatest deviation from normal temperatures is shown in dark red in this image. Average temperatures are white, and cooler-than-average temperatures are blue. The temperature data were collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.

The temperature anomaly was greatest in the Great Dividing Range, which curves along the coasts of Victoria and New South Wales in southeast Australia. The heat and a lack of spring rain may have primed the mountains for devastating wildfires. By the end of December, several large wildfires raced through the mountains, threatening local communities and clouding the skies over much of southeastern Australia with dense smoke.

The high temperatures in the Great Dividing Range and elsewhere were just part of an unusually warm and dry spring, which in turn, was an extension of a dry year. Some of the dryness may be linked to a weak El Niñno in the Pacific Ocean. El Niñno is a regular climate pattern during which sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator heat up and trade winds weaken. Though the effects of El Niñno vary, the phenomenon often changes rainfall patterns around the world. In Australia, El Niñno often brings a dry winter and spring. It is also linked to an increase in the number of extreme fire days, during which conditions are hot, dry, and windy.

DREAM INTERPRETER

The ancient peoples of the east, including Chaldeans, Egyptians and Jews, once had a very high regard for dreams, believing God frequently revealed his will in this manner. They therefore observe their dreams carefully and consulted those dream interpreters who could explain them.

Prime Biblical examples are Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon.

Daniel in Babylon.

Dream

A series of events or images perceived through the mind during sleep. Their function is unknown. Dreams occur in periods of rapid eye movement (REM) by the sleeper, when the cortex of the brain is approximately as active as in waking hours. Dreams occupy about a fifth of sleeping time.

Lucid dreaming is where the dreamer is actually aware that they are in a dream and can control events to some extent.

For the purposes of foretelling the future, dreams fell into disrepute in the scientific atmosphere of the 18th century.

dreamtime

a golden age recorded in the legends of certain Australian aboriginal peoples and held to be the time when their first ancestors were created … the basis of their religious beliefs and creation stories. In the Dreamtime, spiritual beings shaped the land, the first people were brought into being and set in their proper territories, and laws and rituals were established. Belief in a creative spirit in the form of a huge snake, the Rainbow Serpent, occurs over much of Aboriginal Australia, usually associated with waterholes, rain, and thunder. A common feature of religions across the continent is the Aborigines' bond with the land.

The Dreamtime stories describe how giants and animals sprang from the earth, sea, and sky and crisscrossed the empty continent of Australia before returning into the earth. The places where they travelled or sank back into the land became mountain ranges, rocks, and sites full of sacred meaning.  Rituals, which must be re-enacted at certain times of the year in order to maintain the life of the land, are connected with each site. Each Aborigine has a Dreamtime ancestor associated with a particular animal that the person must not kill or injure.

There are two gates, that of ivory and that of horn. Dreams which delude pass through the Ivory Gate, those which come true pass through the Gate of Horn. This fancy depends of two puns: ivory in Greek is elephas, and the verb elephairo means ‘to cheat with empty hopes’; the Greek for horn is keras, and the verb karanoo means ‘to accomplish’.

GILGAL REPHAIM

Gilgal Rephaim … a Stonehenge-like structure built on the Golan Heights, for unknown purposes, 5,000 years ago.

The structure is over 500 feet in diameter and consists of five concentric rings of stones, with two ‘gate’ openings in the northeast and northwest, which appear to line up with the midsummer sunrise and with the star Sirius.

These circles were built on a high flat plateau and there are no hills nearby to look down on it. It can only be appreciated from the air, which is one of the many mysteries attending it.

Original Giant [6 fingered?] inhabitants of Canaan.

The Rephaim

Rephaim is a post-flood synonym for the Nephilim … Anakim .. Avim .. Emim .. Horim .. Suzim .. Zamzummim

Rephaim. A race dwelling around the south of Jerusalem and eastward beyond Jordan, in Bashan, Ammon and Moab, in Ashteroth Karnaim and Shaveh

Kiriathaim; variously called Zamzummim, Zuzim and Emim also Anakim

Anakim [long-necked ones = serpents] Descendants of Arba, a son of Heth, who seven years before the building of Zoar in Egypt, built Hebron, called Kir-jath-arba. Anak, his son, had three distinguished descendants in the days of Moses and Joshua, BC 1490 whose names were Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai and who dwelt in Hebron; in whose presence the Israelites reckoned themselves as grasshoppers. They merged with the Philistines [Palestinians].

Avim destroyed before Moses time.

Emim [serpent spirits; in the singular it is used as “crossways”, the point at which two roads cross each other, therefore a knot; that means that the word is connected with magic, for, knots played a great part in the magic art, with which evil spirits were often connected.] A race of gigantic stature originally dwelling on the east of the Salt Sea. Anciently the whole country was held by a race of giants – The Rephaim on the north; next the Zuzim and next the Horim on the south. The Emim were related to the Anakim.

Horim Horites [troglodites] Aboriginal inhabitants of Mount Seir, probably related to the Emim and Rephaim. Their excavated dwellings are still found in hundreds in the sandstone cliffs and mountains of Edom, but especially at Petra.

Suzim Zuzim Zamzummim [an onomatapoetic word connected with a Semitic root meaning “to hiss”, used of a hissing whistling sound made by the Jinn or evil spirits of the desert in the night.] a tribe of the Rephaim

Nephilim [other name for Rephaim or connected to them] mentioned in connection with “the sons of the gods came unto the daughters of men and they bare children unto them.

All these names then have something mysterious about their origin, they were not beings of this world, they are all included under the name Rephaim. The term Rephaim refers to the giants [sons of gods] and the Nephilim who were destroyed* by God from the earth and cast down into the underworld. [dealt with in the Book of Enoch, viii-xvi; Book of Jubilees, v, and elsewhere]

*the Nephilim may have been obliterated, but their seed has not …

“In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot – twentyfour in all. He also was descended from Rapha”  [Rapha giant ancestor of Philistine warriors.]

WHIMSY - TEXTMAP

Whimsical Notion

I sometimes get so caught up in the magic of words (or in the words of magic) that I get lost for a long time in the detail. But every so often I discover something new and it sparks a notion.

I encounter a word that seems to explode with meaning and it provides me with yet another weapon for my arsenal. With each new discovery I find a new form of attack I can mount against the dissemblers of the language.

And, in such an event, I try the newly-found weapon by giving it a trial run – in an article or sharp phrase. This often has the consequence of provoking amusing or cryptic comments from one of my closest friends.

Not so long ago some of my tactics he described as ‘Whimsical’. Now whimsy, apart from having an interesting euphony, is not a word I tend to use – probably because I was, until that point, unaware of the full meaning of the word.

Having been accused of whimsy, I had no choice but to look the word up in my dictionaries.

What a surprise – another ‘exploding’ word. I say exploding because the meanings spin off in many interesting directions.

Whimsy comes, of course, from ‘whim’, whose main meanings are ‘caprice’, ‘fancy’ and ‘freak’.

By that strange looping quality of the language, we find that freak also means caprice and fancy. So there is an obvious overlap of meaning between whim and freak.

But whim also leads to whim-wham, a ridiculous notion. And notion itself weaves back through meaning caprice or whim. The general and root meanings of whim give us ‘wander with the eyes, as a silly person’: whisk: trifle: giddy: skip: turn. So it has a sort of spinning connotation.

Freak, its near neighbour in meaning, gives:  dance: sport: suddenness: quick: vigorous: bold: rash. Both whim and freak, then, emphasize movement – sudden movement.

Caprice is ‘a change of humour or opinion without obvious reason’. But, at root, it means ‘frisk’ or ‘bristling’.

Frisk is still quick movement, but ‘bristling’ implies a negative reaction to a situation.

Which leaves us with the key meaning of ‘fancy’. The word comes from phantom via fantasie. Fantasie gives us ‘make visible’, ‘imagination’ and ‘display’.

Phantom provides ‘vision’, ‘shew’, ‘spectre’, ‘apparition’, all from the root, ‘shine’.

Notion means ‘investigation’, ‘conception’, ‘opinion’, ‘belief’, ‘judgement’ from the root of ‘known’.

It sums a lot of inter-related meanings which might seem overwhelming at first. Nonetheless they fall into clusters with basic ideas at root, Whim, freak and caprice all denote quick movement. This then is the primary meaning. Fancy/fantasie have meanings all connected with vision and making visible. Notion is connected with what is known or conceived.

So there is a process at work It begins with the notion, turns into a whim and then makes the whim visible – or so the structure of the definitions would lead us to believe.

We tend to think of whims only in the capricious way. But there is quite obviously purposeful meaning when we dig a little deeper. It leaves me wondering whether we ‘bristle’ (caprice) at phantoms (fancy) …

… but, perhaps, that is just another whimsical notion
