The Ciphers, Codes and Chronlogies of Nostradamus
At the recent turn of the millennium, and for some years before, the peculiar quatrains of Nostradamus came under increasing scrutiny. In particular verse 72 of century X almost jumped off the page ...
L’an mil neuf cens nonante neuf sept mois, [In the year 1999 and seven months,]
du ciel viendra un grand Roi deffraieur. [from heaven comes a great king of terror.]
Resusciter le grand Roi d’Angolmois. [The great king of the Mongols he resuscitates.]
Avant que Mars regner par bon heur ... [Before Mars reigns for a good hour ...]
1999 came and went, but no obvious terror from the skies was apparent. Had Nostradamus got it wrong? Erica Cheetham would probably think so. She certainly thought that another verse, with an overt date, had failed. The verse in question is number 49 of Century I, where the year 1700 occurs quite plainly. But the events described did not. At least, not in 1700 AD.
Both these examples indicate that matters are either fraudulent ... or more complex than they seem. The latter turns out to be the case. For Nostradamus provides the clues.
We are not restricted to his quatrains. He also wrote two key prose introductions to his prophecies.
In his ‘Letter to son, Caesar’, 1555, he says :
‘... I was willing for the common good to enlarge myself in dark and abstruse sentences, declaring the future events, chiefly the most urgent and those which I foresaw [whatever human mutation happened] would not offend the hearers, all under dark figures more than prophetical.’ [3.2]
... limiting the particularity of places which were arrived at by divine and supernatural inspiration, according to the celestial figures, [8.4]
‘... I have made Books of Prophecies, each one containing a hundred Astronomical Stanzas, which I have joined obscurely, and are perpetual prophecies from this year to the year 3797, at which some perhaps will frown, seeing so large an extension of time, and that I treat of everything under the Moon.* [9.3]
‘… Now we are governed by the Moon, under the power of Almighty God; which Moon before she hath finished her circuit, the Sun shall come, and then Saturn. [12.3]
We are then alerted to ‘dark and abstruse sentences ... joined obscurely’, ‘from this year [1555] to the year 3797 ... under dark figures more than prophetical’, a span of 2242 years, under, or governed by the moon and the sun.
Dark and abstruse sentences deal with codes.
Dark figures deal with ciphers. [Celestial figures deal with astrological / astronomical chronologies.]
Dark Sentences
In his ‘Epistle to Henry II’, 1558, Nostradamus says of his method:
“I have dedicated my nocturnal and prophetical calculations, written rather by a natural instinct and poetical furor than by any rules of poetry; and the most part of it written and agreeing with the years, months and weeks, of the regions, countries and most of the towns and cities in Europe; touching also something of Africa, and a part of Asia, by the change of regions that come near to these climates and compounded in a natural fashion. But some may answer that the rhyme is as easy to be understood, as the sense is hard to get at. Therefore, O most humane King, most of the prophetical stanzas are so difficult, that there is no way to be found for the interpretation of them. Nevertheless, being in hope of setting down the towns, cities and regions, wherein most of those shall happen, especially in the year
1585 … [July 7, 1585, Henry III is forced to sign the Treaty of Nemours with the Guises, in which he capitulates to their demands for revoking all toleration to Huguenots; this provokes the War of the Three Henries (Henry III, Henry of Navarre and Henry of Guise). End of the Anglo-French alliance under the Treaty of Blois of 1572.], … and in the year 1606, beginning from this present time which is 14th March 1557.
[4] Going further to the fulfilling of those things, which shall be in the beginning of the seventh millenary, according to my astronomical calculation and other learning which I could reach [at which time the adversaries of Christ and of his church shall begin to multiply], all has been composed and calculated in days and hours of election, and well disposed, and all as accurately as was possible for me to do. And the whole ‘Minerva libera et non invita.’ [‘When Minerva - (the goddess of crafts and learning, equivalent to the Greek goddess [Athena] of wisdom, cities, and crafts, born an adult from the head of Zeus.) - was free and favourable.] , calculating almost as much of the time that is come, as of that which is past, comprehending it in the present time, and what by the course of the said time shall be known to happen in all regions punctually as it is here written, adding nothing superfluous, although it can be said: ‘Quod de futuris non est determinata omnino veritas.’ [‘There can be no truth entirely determined for certain which concerns the future.’]
Cloudy Obscurities
So we begin by seeking the unusual. And we find one example almost immediately, in verse 2, Century I, where the word BRANCHES occurs in capital letters. An emphasis made to make a point. What point? Something branches. What? Capitalised words?
There are thirty or so such capitalised words appearing, seemingly at random, in the quatrains. Many could be names of people. These words recur in other verses.

Selin may be a variant of Selene, the moon. It is linked in the verses with Chyren. There have been Islamic leaders called Selim. Pau is nominally the river Po. A verse containing the NAME Selin, and a verse containing the NAME Pau also includes one Ogmion, to be found, almost as the sole NAME in the ‘Epistle to Henry II’ ...
[19.2] Afterwards the Gallic Ogmion shall pass the Mount Jovis (Barcelona) followed with such a number that even from afar off the Empire shall be presented with its grand law, and then and for some time after, shall be profusely spilled the blood of the innocents by the guilty raised on high.
This key NAME leads us to the following quatrains ...
[5.80 Logmion will approach Byzantium, chasing out the barbaric league of the two laws, the pagan one fails, barbarian and freeman in perpetual struggle.]
[6.42 To Ogmion the kingdom of the great Selin* will be left, who will do even more. He will extend his banner throughout Italy and it will be ruled by careful forgery]
[8.44 The natural offspring of Ogmion will turn off the road from seven to nine. To the king long friend ofd the half man, Navarre must destroy the fort at PAU*]
[9.89 Philip will prosper for seven years, he will cut down again Arab exertions. Then in the middle a perplexing, contrary affair. Young Ogmion will destroy his fort]

Dark Figures, Celestial Figures … Astronomical Cycles: I. The 354 Year Cycle
The basic Jewish year is made up of 354 days, that is 6 months each of 29 days plus 6 months of 30 days alternating. This reflects the month of solar/lunar phases of 29.5 days. [Which is not to be confused with the stellar/lunar month of 27.3 days – the basis of the astrological ‘Lunar Mansions’ used by the ancient world.]
By peculiar astronomical coincidence the planet Saturn has an alternating circuit of 29 and 30 years! Here is the origin of the astrological term ‘year for a day’. And hence for a cycle of 354 years – 12 orbits of Saturn.
Astrologers of 1555 recognised a recurring 7-fold sequence based on units of 354 years. Each of the seven sections of the resultant timespan were assigned to planetary rulership – in reverse daily order:
Venus . Jupiter . Mercury . Mars . Moon . Sun . Saturn
On this basis the years
1281 – 1534 were allotted to Mars 1535 – 1888 were allotted to the Moon
1889 – 2242 were allotted to the Sun 2242 – 2596 were allotted to Saturn
In Century I, verse 48, we find:
Seven thousand years another holds his monarchy [7000]
When the Sun takes his days wearily [1889 – 2242]
This is indeed the key verse.
1. Letter To Son … ‘perpetual prophecies from this year … 1555 … to the year 3797 … difference 2242
2. Epistle to Henry II … 1st Chronology … Adam – Jesus … 4758 … Creation span 7000 … difference 2242
From 4758 B.C. to 2242 A.D. is 7000 years. The year 2242 A.D. is, on this basis, equivalent to the year 7000 after creation. So the literal accept-ance of the phrase ‘the year 3797’ – stated firmly by most interpreters, is in error. Nostradamus’ prophecies end with the last year of the cycle of the sun – 2242 – as he himself has stated.
This aligns his chronological framework within a recognised scheme of the times. However there is a second biblical chronology in his Epistle to Henry II. It differs in both detail and total from the first!
Conventional modern astrology reckons the complete cycle of the precession of the equinoxes at 25,920 years – twelve astrological ages that each last 2160 years. This last is a convenient, if innaccurate figure, as it is the sum of 6 x 360.
The hippies of the late sixties, promoting the new Aquarian Age, were swayed by the roughest of calculations. Even the approximate 2160 was rounded off to 2000. Perhaps from an unconconscious recognition of the 1000 year cycle. [A day in the life of God.]
So, it would seem that even the closing date of 2242 is itself a cipher, for it is far too late. [Even counting 33 AD + 2160 only = 2193.]
For a resolution we need look to details. As stated earlier, each cycle of 354 years is made up of 12 orbits of Saturn, each of alternating 29 and 30 year periods.
Let us look at recent world-shaking history. Two World Wars with key dates.
Refering back to the planetary-rulership cycle of each 354 year period, to the rulership of the Moon is given the years … 1535-1888
If we add a 29 year cycle of Saturn, we get … 1917 the year that Jerusalem was taken from Islam. Also the year of the Balfour Declaration, paving the way for the State of Israel.
One year later, 1918 and the first world was over for the west [who seem to follow 30 year cycles.] Another year on 1919 began a new world order: the League of Nations – by coincidence, the subject of the preceding verse, I. 47.]: The speeches of Lac Leman [Geneva] become angry, days drag into weeks, months, years and then fail. The magistrates damn their empty powers.
Add a 30 year period to end of sub-cycle 1 … 1947 and we have the year of the independence of india plus the League of nations failed. Add one year: 1948 and we arrive at the year Israel became a state.
Since these dates concern our western history, a brief look at the alternate large cycle of 360 [12 x 30] years should help with the overall context
A half period of 354 – 177 years, is mentioned in Nostradamus letter to his son: ‘from the present time that I write this before 177 years ...’ i.e. 6 circuits of Saturn.
Accession of Elizabeth I … 1558 … Empire seed
Armada defeated … [+ 30] …1588 … Empire stamp
1558 + 360 … 1918 … seed of end
1588 + 360 … 1948 … stamp of end
viz ‘England empire for more than 300 years’ Century X. verse 100
[An even more calendrical 365 year cycle gives 1588 + 365: 1953, the coronation of the second Elizabeth]
Further detail in Century III, verse 57, ‘Seven times you shall see the English change, dyed in blood in two hundred and ninety years ...’ In 1707 Scotland was incorporated. In 1999 there was a new Scottish parliament and a period of 292/3 years had passed. [Two cycles 0f 354 require an additional 292 year cycle to complete the 1000.][Ten circuits of Saturn take 295 years]
In the best-selling book, ‘The Bible Code’, a date of 2006 is given for nuclear conflict connected with Israel. The Jewish soli/lunar 354 day/ Saturnian 354 year cycle [Nostradamus first issued 354 verses!], made up of alternating 29 and 30 year/day cycles gives us: Last year, cycle of the Moon …
1888 … cycles of Saturn
+ 29 … 1917 + 30 … 1918 … [1] … 1917/1918 … Jerusalem freed
+ 30 … 1947 + 29 … 1947 … [2] … 1947/1948 … Israel state
+ 29 … 1976 + 30 … 1977 … [3]
+ 30 … 2006 + 29 … 2006 … [4] … time cut short?
The only problem here is that the Christian calendar date given here of 2006 is a conversion of the Hebrew year 5766 [correct me anyone?]. Unfortunately, at the time of this amendment, October 2006, the Hebrew calendar has just moved on … however the North Koreans are threatening to explode a nuclear device very shortly …
+ 29 … 2035 + 30 … 2036 … [5]
+ 30 … 2065 + 29 … 2065 … [6]

The Other Bracket: Century I, Verse 49
A lot before such schemings, the Oriental one by the virtue of the moon, in the year 1700 will take away many and almost subdue the North.
1700 is enciphered. If we read ... ‘... by virtue of the moon in the year 1700 ...’ perhaps we should be seeking a lunar sum: 1700 + ? = ?

At least one contra-indication to the ‘Loose Change’ Net Documentary that claims an inside job!
In 1555 the initial release of Nostradamus’ prophetic ‘Centuries’ began. There were 353 quatrains or verses. Why 353?
Ian Wilson, in his ‘Nostradamus: the evidence’, suggests it was down to a question of the number of pages printed.
His answer is no good. It’s just too thin. [I used to be a printer] So why 353?
A number of interpreters have pointed to the fact that the prophecies are built on a recurring periodicy of 354 years. Indeed Trimethius a century before made use of just such a system. But the latter is based on a periodicy of 354 years and four months. Again, why?
We know that the Jewish calendar, based on alternating months of 29 and 30 days, produces a calendar year of 354 days. [Intercalary months are added periodically to keep in line with the true year of 365.24 days.]
So our first clue has to do with the moon and its periodicy. The time between lunar phases, the synodical month, is actually 29.53 days. Multiplied by 12 = 354.36. Taken as years [‘a year for a day’] we have 354 years 4 months and 11 days or so. This therefore must be the basis of Trimethius’ system.
All of which moves us further away from 353.
However, by seeming coincidence, the periodicy of the major planet Saturn brings it back to the same relative position, in alternating lengths of 29 years and 30 years. And when we realise that the true average return time is 29.458 years. Multiplied by 12 = 353.496.
This is the real clue. Nostradamus is effectively hinting that Saturn’s periodicy, and not the Moon’s, is the base framework. He is not blindly following Trimethius. Besides which, Nostradamus’ planetary cycles are 11 years out of alignment with Trimethius.
Confirmation that the cycles of Saturn are key, comes with the release of the remaing quatrains. According to best evidence, 640 verses [including the original 353] were released: Centuries I – VI plus 40 verses of Century VII.
The final release, including an additional 302 verses, bringing the total to 942, were issued: Centuries I – VI plus 42 verses of Century VII plus Centuries VIII – X.
So, we have 353 + 287 + 302 = 942. We assume the first 353 to be Saturn related. This leaves us with 287 + 302 = 589. Or, alternatively 287+2 + 300 = 942, as Century VII eventually contains 42 verses [642 – 353 = 289]. To make this more obvious visually, we can see that the verses were released with the following intention: 353 + 289 + 300
289 is nearly 290. So the ratio of the last two releases is roughly 29 : 30 – back to Saturn periodicies again! Added together we have an additional release of verses totalling 589. Twenty cycles of Saturn total some 589.16. years.
We are now in a position to argue forcibly that Saturn rules the quatrains. And our prophet as much as says so.
“Now we are governed by the Moon, under the power of Almighty God; which Moon before she hath finished her circuit, the Sun shall come, and then Saturn … Paragraph 12, Line 3, letter to son, Caesar
