The New Market District Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co., Inc. was organized by the New Market Lions Club and was incorporated February 24, 1955. President Clyde Smith and Chief James R. Hahn were the finest Company Officers. Meetings were held in the Grange Hall. The first engine, a 500-gallon pumper, was purchased in May 1955 and was placed in service on June 11, 1955. During the year 1955, the company answered 11 calls. Twenty-one firemen completed a 21 week Basic Training Course in 1955. In March, 1956, the Company purchased the Baker property of approximately 5 acres for a fire hall and carnival grounds. Their first successful carnival was held in July 1956. The footings for the fire hall were poured in April 1959. All the unskilled labor on the building was done by the firemen on Saturdays and evenings. The Ladies Auxiliary furnished the kitchen at a cost of approximately $5,000. Ambulance 159 was placed in service in December 1979. New Market Station 15 now houses a 1,000 gallon Rescue Pumper, a 2000gal Engine Tanker, a Brush truck, two Ambulances, a Boat, a Utility, a Duty Vehicle and a Chief's car. Plans to add a substation started in 1982. Groundbreaking for the Green Valley substation was July 1, 1984. Dedication of the New Market/Green Valley substation was on Sunday, June 23, 1985. The substation houses a 1000gal Pumper, a 1500gal Engine Tanker, a Brush truck and a Ambulance. There are plans for a new building at Sta.15 starting July 2007, new building at Sta.25, and a Rescue Squad service at Sta.15. |
