Artistic Director

Newcastle Area Chamber Opera was founded in 2007 and its artistic director is the international opera and concert singer Austin Gunn.

Austin Gunn is regarded as one of the leading young singers in the UK and has been performing on stage since the age of 12.  As an opera and concert singer he frequently performs roles alongside some of the most established singers in the world under the batons of such distinguished conductors as Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir David Wilcocks, Christian Curnyn, David Robertson, Garry Walker, Martin Andre, Paul Spicer and Peter Schreier and with stage directors Martin Lloyd Evans, Olivier Pye, Analise Miskimmons, John Ramster, Lee Blakeley, and Mark Hathaway.  For the Edinburgh International Festival alone he has performed the roles of 'Vorsinger' in Mozart's 'Zaide' with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra directed by Sir Charles Mackerras, '1st Tenor Soloist' in the highly acclaimed production of Britten's 'Curlew River' and  'Zweite Lehrbube' in Brian Macmaster's dream cast of Wagner's 'Die Meistersingers von Nuremburg' at with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

He has recorded extensively for the BBC, is director of vocal studies for OperaLab, is an approved teacher for the University of York, vocal consultant to St John's College, Durham University and gives workshops for OperaLab in Paris, Brussels and Geneva as well for other vocal and musical organizations.  He has been involved in direction and production for a number of years now and is looking forward to bringing chamber opera to the Newcastle area and beyond.
