Cotto Wins-Margarito Repeats Victory

Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States

A lot had changed since three years ago in April 2005 when Antonio Margarito knocked out the undefeated Kermit Cintron to defend his WBO welterweight title. Margarito lost his WBO belt to Paul Williams and Cintron impressed in winning the IBF title. It was to the point that when the two were to meet in a rematch tonight, picking a winner with any conviction was challenging.

Or so it seemed!

Antonio Margarito 36-5(26) tonight impressed again by winning the IBF title by stopping defending champion Kermit Cintron  in the sixth round. Margarito pressed Cintron and was leading on the cards when he finished Kermit with a devastating bodyshot at 1:57 of the round. Cintron fell to 29-2(27) with both of his loses by stoppage at the hands of Margarito. Not there is one more welterweight for Mayweather to avoid!

Miguel Angel Cotto 32-0(26) stopped Alfonso Gomez 18-4-2(8) in the sixth round of a one sided fight in the HBO main event Saturday night. Gomez was down in rounds 2, 3 & 5.

Campbell upsets Diaz----------------------------------Peter takes out Maskaev

Cancun, Mexico

Nate Campbell 32-5-1(25) has been paying his dues and was ready to collect his interest. Saturday night he did this against defending IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight champion Juan Diaz. Diaz 33-1(17) who was previously undefeated again chose to punch with his opponent but this time it backfired as Campbell was too strong, too determined and too hungry to give in. After a strong finish by Campbell the final scores were 114-113 Diaz and 115-112 and 116-111 for the new champion Nate Campbell!

Samuel Peter 30-1(23) finally has a title! He started his run by beating James Toney in a WBC title elimination. The WBC then ordered him to fight Toney in another elimination in which he beat Toney more decisively. Then the WBC ordered him to back down for the retired Vitali Klitschko could come out of retirement for a title shot. His people took the WBC to court and he finally was to get his shot. Then Maskaev suffered an injury and Peter patiently waited. Finally getting his shot Peter was again disappointed as Maskaev again pulled out with another injury. Peter's camp put the pressure on the WBC and they finally agreed to let Peter fight Jameel McCline for the interum title. Saturday night in Mexico Peter finally got his shot as Oleg Maskaev 34-6(26) finally got in the ring with him. The fight which wasn't pretty finally was underway. Maskaev showed the ringrust 15 months of inactivity can cause, but still landed his shots as both fighters labored through the early rounds. Finally Peter hurt Maskaev in the six and a barrage of punches prompted referee Guadelupe Garcia to end matters in that frame.

Mayorga Wins

Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga 28-6-1(22) beats Fernando Vargas 26-5(22) by majority decision to win "The Brawl". Mayorga who won by the scores of 114-112, 115-111 & 113-113 was the agressor early and Vargas fought his way back into it later in the 12 rounder. Vargas who will supposedly retire now, was knocked down in the first and later in the eleventh.

On the Mayorga/Vargas undercard which was shown on Showtime PPV, IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron was given a tough go by the game Jesse Feliciano 15-6-3(9). Feliciano took everything Cintron 29-1(27) threw early and as the bout got going smothered the champion's power by fighting inside. Then in the tenth Cintron landed a few punches and referee Jon Schorle decided it was time for a premature stoppage so he called it.

Shobox featured a heavybout between Eddie Chambers 30-0(16) and Calvin Brock 31-2(23) in which Chambers squeaked out a split decision.

The bout was supposed to be a heavyweight title elimination bout but don't let their records fool you. Neither of these heavyweights are worthy of a title shot, Brock somehow got his top ten rating back by being dropped by a journeyman cruiserweight in  his last bout and Chambers was not ranked in the top twelve! Oh that IBF!

Wait A Minute. Before you read on, I've got to say!

Two fights I watched tonight were Carl Johanneson vs. Michael Gomez which was a very good fight and T.J. Wilson vs. Travis Walker which wasn't.
When I watched the Johanneson/Gomez ending I thought though debatable, the stoppage might have been a bit early. I thought to myself a few years ago this would have been an early stoppage. I thought to myself all the early stoppages we have seen this year. It is getting worse.
Now you can cliche me with 'better too early than too late'. At least thats what every referee says when they pull the plug prematurely. They stop fights now when a fighter gets hit. Come on, thats the business. Boxers train and make sacrifices with the hope the referee gives them a chance.
Just think Archie Moore/Yvonne Durelle. Todays refs. wouldn't have allowed Moore to get out of the first round. Could you imagine the ref. stopping Ali/Foreman during the Rope-a-Dope. Foreman/Lyle no way, too violent. Heck Mike Weaver would have never come back to stop Tate, the ref. would have stopped it already.
As I'm thinking this I turn on the T.J. Wilson vs. Travis Walker bout on Showtime. Wilson hit Walker a few times and the ref. stopped it 15 seconds of the first round. No Knockdowns, and getting hit with three straight unanswered punches is enough to stop a fight? It's crazy, and I fear it's not going to get any better soon.
Thats what I think!

Peter Survives Scare-Saturday October 7th

Madison Square Garden in New York City

WBC interim heavyweight champion Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter 28-1(22) defended against Jameel McCline with a 12 round unanimous decision. But it wasn't easy. McCline now 38-7-3(23) dropped Peter in the third with a shoulder-uppercut combination. Then in the fourth again dropped Peter twice and had him on serious queer street. Peter weathered the storm and fought hard down the stretch to win by scores of 113-112, 115-111, 115-110. Now we have to ask, what if it was Maskaev was landing the punches instead of McCline.

In  Hartford, Connecticut,

Antonio Tarver failed to impress as he won a twelve round majority decision over Elvir Muriqi 34-4(21). Tarver 25-4(18) looked a 25-4 fighter rather than a P4P candidate he tried to convince he was a couple of years ago. On the undercard WBC Lightheavyweight champion Chad Dawson 24-0(16) looked a main event fighter(unlike Tarver) as he stopped (lucky to be here) challenger Jesus Ruiz 19-5(17) to retain the title.

Whats with Jermaine Taylor?

Isn't he a special fighter. One thats up to the task of holding his own with Hopkins, Wright and the top fighters of the game.

Then why can't he win impressively. Where is the expected dominance?

Jermaine unimpressively and barely retained his WBC and WBO middleweight weight title with a boring uneventful split decision over former welterweight and current IBF Jr.middleweight champion Cory Spinks 36-2(11) Saturday night in Memphis Tn. Just when we where sure ESPN2 had the boring fight of the year in Zahir Raheem/Cristobal Cruz the night before.
