Hint: It's Not What You Think
When I first thought about joining the electronic circus called Internet Marketing, I thought only about making large amounts of dosh, you know, money, coin, a decent living. I was so broke, I could not see straight. I was paying the bills, and just making a living, but it was not much of a life, for me, my wife or my children. We did not take a much needed holiday break for 10 years. I know I am complaining, but it could have been worse: We could have been living in a tent on the local common. That wasn’t far away from the truth I can tell you.
Like a lot of wannabe entrepreneurs running a small, traditional business, I always seemed to be a quid short and a day late. It did not matter that an opportunity might be passing me by because even if I recognized an opportunity, I did not know what to do with it. I prided myself on not being an employee (hired help). I was self-employed and worked alone. I did not realize I was an employee also. The only difference was an employee had a job, and I owned a job. I did not realize that the most difficult way to make money in the world is to be self-employed; it is much easier and less stressful to have a job, be hired help, and get a benefit package.
Then I was reading one day and came across this quote from a British author that seemed to capture my feeling exactly: "Money is like a sixth sense without which we cannot make a complete use of the other five." Nothing before or since has made more sense to me. You just can not even begin to realize your potential without getting "the lack of money" problem in your life solved, once and for all.
How? I had made a career out of being stuck in the mud, muck and mire of being just the average guy surviving. In desperation, I had bought copies of “How to get Rich Quickly” guides which eventually led to more debt because of mail order advertising rates and no fantastic orders as the books, guides advised I would get. Mail Order was certainly in my opinion a dead loss unless of course you have an advertising budget of Microsoft.
Buy a Computer and get rich! Man, it all sounded so good, kind of like the asinine ads you see when you turn on your computer, and there in your monitor is the next "great" opportunity online. You know, the one where the business system is automated, you can make £10,000 a month and, best of all, there is no prospecting, no calling, no selling, and no contact with people, you just set it up and the cash rolls in and crushes you with so many hundred dollar bills you become a giant billboard for Internet Marketing success, and the next great guru. What a load of Baloney!
I thought the authors advice was very good advice. I truly wanted to do something, but got stuck on two of his thoughts that I was not sure I could overcome:
1) Making more money will not solve your problems if cash flow management is the problem. Let's get personal: Making more money will not be a solution to your money issues if money management is really your problem. Either you get in control of your personal finances, your spending, increasing debt, and/or the paying of interest on debt will be in control of you.
2) You really need to become debt free BEFORE you start investing. You know this without my really saying so: When you are paying 18% to 21% on your credit card debt, for example, and not earning a lot more than 18% to 21% on your investments, you are going backwards about a 1,000 miles an hour.
Both of these thoughts were upsetting to me because I knew he was right as right can be. If you do what everyone else does, you will have what everyone else has, and for most people, what they have is years of hard work, unfair taxes and a lifetime of debt. And let me tell you, I had some debt. I was forced to re-mortgage my home and eventually I had to sell and live in a rented property. Life is a bitch they say and then we die! How true!
The hardest thing I have ever done in my life was to change my thought process, belief system and core being. It darn near killed me to give up my stubbornness and stupidity. I had to accept the fact that if I lacked the will for change, there was no one who could show me the way. And so I suffered through some terrific growing pains, got in control of my cash flow, and 38 months later had retired £32,000 in debt to become debt free.
Retiring debt is not easy because it is difficult to spend less than we earn. It is difficult to save money because we live in an American culture here in England that values spending more than saving; is it any wonder we are in debt most of our lives? We are constantly given incentives to spend our money by retail outlets, marketers, scam artists and even our government, which allows us to deduct more interest on our mortgage payment when we go further into debt by buying a more expensive home. God help the people who have a whole lot to lose if/when interest rates jump up. It WILL happen! We do not get much of a tax break for saving money or working hard for it? Our government is a poor example of financial responsibility; our government's national debt is several millions of pounds because it spends more money than it receives in taxes. Thank goodness for
Worse yet, our educational system provided by our government is considered very poor when it comes to financial education. Our schools focus on teaching scholastic and professional skills, but not on financial skills. How can the education system teach a subject that it does not know? The shocking fact is that 96% of us will retire without enough money to maintain our lifestyle in retirement. When you have a job and are hired help, you are a victim of the English/American Educational System, which teaches you how to be a worker bee. When in your schooling were you taught how to be financially free, how to be an entrepreneur, or how to be a successful business person? Heck, even graduates with a Master of Business Administration Degree are taught how to be hired help for a corporation at a higher level.
Even positive thinking and motivational techniques will not raise us out of a sinkhole of debt because most people went to school and never learned how money works, so they spend the rest of their lives working for money. I no longer work for money. I now know my mind, more than my actions, determines my net worth. I could have spent the rest of my life working myself to death but chose not to. I have become the master of my mind rather than its slave. I am now in a position to buy back my time and my financial freedom. I am not walking by myself on a lonely road, I am happy to at least be debt free and now in real credit. Is there anyone online who would like to join me in being debt free for real?

In the final analysis it is all up to YOU to heed the advice. There is no easy street solution, you will have to work, but hopefully work in the comfort of your own home and not a tent.
