Last season we held this event to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance. This season we decided to just hold it as a normal club night and find another opportunity for our charity work. The winners from 2007 were Norway (Mike Parnaby), and the holders were Sweden (Chris Thomas).
The teams were drawn randomly and most had never been used before tonight. We were delighted to welcome two new players to the club for this event. Neil Youngson used to play many years ago, and being a local lad, fancied another game or two. He found the club through local press. Chris Wrigley is from Kendal but happened to be in the area on the 'right' day so made a welcome return to playing!
Round one kicked off with 4 wins! Zambia were overpowered by Romania 5-0 and Sweden got their defence of the title off to a good start against Germany, winning 3-0. Russia beat Spain 2-0 in what proved to be a vital win. Japan and Cameroon produced a cracking game with Japan won by the odd goal in five!
Round two started with the battle of the 'yellows' as Romania and Sweden battled out a 1-1 draw. Russia squeaked past Japan with a 1-0 win. Spain got going with a 4-0 win against Cameroon. Germany sneaked past the hosts Zambia by a single goal.
The final round of games begain with three teams still being capable of winning the title. These were Russia, Romania and Sweden. Zambia finally gave the fans something to cheer with a 1-0 win over fellow African team Cameroon. Japan gave Germany a 3-0 lesson. Sweden blew their chances! After leading 1-0 against Spain they slumped to a 3-1 defeat. This left Russia and Romania to battle for the title and the Russians were too good, winning 4-2.
So the final placings are:-
1st Russia - 3 wins out of 3 (2-0, 1-0, 4-2)
2nd Spain - good performance on debut (0-2, 4-0, 3-1)
3rd Japan - solid all night (3-2, 0-1, 3-0)
4th Romania - nothing if not exciting! (5-0, 1-1, 2-4)
5th Sweden - good title defence (3-0, 1-1, 1-3)
6th= Zambia - not disgraced at home (0-5, 0-1, 1-0)
6th= Germany - not the machine of old! (0-3, 1-0, 0-3)
8th Cameroon - not their tournament! (2-3, 0-4, 0-1)
The Trophy!
