With the international release of "99 Luftballons" is 1984, the German band Nena achieved superstardom on a level that they had never imagined; the song's "vividly melodious electropop sound", according to the Rolling Stone, sent it spiraling to the top of the charts all around the world.
In the UK, an English version of the song, entitled "99 Red Balloons" was released and reigned atop the British charts for three weeks, culminating in the strikingly beautiful Nena Kerner and the band performing the single on Top of the Pops. Nena toured Europe and Japan throughout 1984, also flying to the United States for a promotional visit.
After the hype of "99 Luftballons" died down, the band released a number of other singles worldwide, but never achieved as much success in the United States and Great Britain as they had before. But in Europe and Japan they were one of the most successful bands of the 1980's.
When Nena disbanded in 1987, lead singer Nena Kerner settled down with a family and pursued a solo career. Still recording hit albums and selling out arenas, she has remained relevant after over 25 years in music, proving that she's firmly established a very large fan base.
