Program Overview:

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program in Tobago allows trained persons to be better prepared to respond to an emergency situation in their communities. When emergencies occur, CERT Technicians can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community.

The full purpose of the program is to provide the community with well trained professional responders who can assist in the event of a natural or man-made disaster that overwhelms or delays the island's immediate response capabilities.

The CERT Career Concept was developed by NEMA Tobago, which aims at making available adequately trained personnel to immediately respond to any emergency / disaster that may occur in a community, in a professional manner.

A CERT Volunteer arm is attached to each team, which would provide an auxiliary support to the operation of each team.

Tobago CERT Career Training 2005
The Community Emergency Response Team career training began following interview held for applicants on (Thursday 17th November 2005).  The National Emergency Management Agency has selected forty-six (46) participants to be trained as Certified Emergency Response Technicians.
The following are Photo clips of the Interview Panel:

On the 21st of November, 2005 a short opening ceremony was held at the training venue- (Trinidad and Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute (Tobago Campus), Mt. St. George, Tobago.  The first of thirteen (13) subject areas of training began, facilitated by the Emergency Training Institute of Trinidad and Tobago.  The trainees began training first as Emergency Medical Technicians on the 21st of November 2005 and continues daily between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm until the 16th of December 2005.

The aim of this training program is to expose these trainees to a high-end level of training over a three (3) month period, with the hope of achieving multi-skilled CERT Technicians.  The goal is to create teams that will be placed in the rural villages of Tobago, such as Charlotteville, Delaford and Parlatuvier.  These teams will be equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to provide their communities with an immediate response during any emergency or disaster, night or day.
