Committees in Our Co-op
As is evident to every member, Neilson Creek Housing Co-op is well structured and runs itself, keeping housing affordable. This could not happen without the participation of the members.

Board of Directors
The Board manages the business of the Co-op under the Co-operative Corporations Act and the Bylaws, approving the expenses, direction and job duties of the staff, and approving new members among other duties to properly administer the Co-op.

Bylaws
The Bylaws is actually a subcommittee of the Board and researches proposed bylaw changes, making sure they are in accordance with the Co-operative Corporations Act. It also updates the bylaws manual periodically.

Finance Committee
The Finance plans the annual budget and tries to resolve arrears in the Co-op, recommending solutions to the Board.

Landscaping Committee
Landscaping is a "hands on" committee that plans, prepares and establishes the gardens and overall upkeep of them.

Maintenance Committee
Maintenance recommends major work and contracts to the Board, approves unit modifications by the members, schedules the annual spring and fall cleanups, annual air conditioning maintenance and other work duties to be done.

Membership Committee
Membership interviews prospective applicants and recommends their acceptance or non acceptance to the Board.

Inspection Committee
Inspection carries out the annual unit inspections to check for deficiencies, structural work to be done and that the Co-op's equipment is running properly.

Newsletter Committee
As it's name suggests, this committee plans and implements the periodical newsletter with entertainment and Co-op and community events for all ages.

Participation Committee
The main function of this committee is to monitor participation and to resolve any differences that may come up with the participation section of the Co-op's bylaws.

Rules Committee
The Rules meets and handles grievenaces and complaints within the Co-op. It also inspects the back yards to make sure they are presentable.

Social Committee
This committee plans the social events of the Co-op - whether it be bingo, parties or preparing the food at the cleanups. Since the Co-op officially opened in 1981, the Social Committee has hosted the Christmas party for the children every year.

Hands On
Many people prefer to participate physically instead of going through the administrative functions of committees. This has a wide range from working in the common areas to putting their skills to work in various areas. Some of them are snow shovelling, raking leaves, cutting grass, sweeping the gutters out in the cul de sacs, air conditioning inspections, eaves troughs, helping the staff, and in their own specialized trades.
