The origins of Sweet go back to some time in March of 2008, when I came across the concept of "micronations" while surfing on Wikipedia. Out of my curiosity, I researched various micronations on Wikipedia, along with how and why they come to be. I also checked out a wide range of web sites of micronations, which gave me an idea of the kind of people who start micronations.
I then had a brainwave, to create a micronation! I read various articles on the web on how to start a micronation or a country, where I learned what I would need to start a micronation and how I should organise it. I learned that to create a micronation, I would need land, a constitution and citizens; it was not enough just to have one citizen and a web site as a nation.
From then on, I declared my house an independent nation and I decided to call it, "The Nation of Sweet". I chose that name as I intended to establish my country as a place of freedom and bliss. I then ambitiously set up this web site, using other micronation web sites as templates to get an idea of what should be included.
My nation now had a name, a location and a web site; the next stage was to gain citizens. This stage was going to be tricky; I began by setting up an application form on the site, to which no one responded. Over the weeks, I started to forget about Sweet and gaining citizens. Sweet was beginning to fade into obscurity...
But then a few weeks later, on 27th April 2008, I came back to this site and decided to officially found the Nation of Sweet. I decided to establish Sweet as a partially land-based, partially internet-based democracy; similar to that of the Kingdom of Lovely. I also decided that the best way to gain citizens would be through a popular medium, such as social networking sites.
I then decided that my nation was to be unique in that it was based on social networking and that it's citizens are recruited through the joining of the nation's profiles. I decided that a good way to maintain my country was to make it a democracy based around discussion; some of which takes place in person and some of which through an internet forum. This way, I could keep people involved, allowing my nation to expand.
The next stage was to write a constitution for Sweet. In order to get some understanding on why and how a constitution is written, I looked at some real country's constitutions on the internet. I noticed that they were split into various chapters which covered different aspects of the country, from the land to the government, and that they were split into articles. I then typed out Sweet's own constitution, modelling it on other constitutions. I made sure that the constitution of Sweet conveyed my primary target, which was to found a nation that is focused on the liberty and happiness of the people.
I now had land, a web site, a constitution, a place for discussion and a method to get hold of citizens. I now had the essential elements that I needed to create my micronation.
On Tuesday 29th April at around 10:57am, I declared the Nation of Sweet officially founded.
