The Siberian Husky was origianlly bred in Asia to be a sled dog.  They were introduced into the U.S.,  namely Alaska,  in 1909 to compete in races.  The Alaskans were impressed with them from the beginning.  Further  recognition of these dogs and their abilities resulted from thier delivering lifesaving medicine to Nome, Alaska in 1925.  Their fame spread through New England  and the Husky earned AKC status in 1930.  Huskies are very adaptable,  affectionate and extremely intelligent.  With no fear of strangers, people or other dogs, he is easy to join in new families and situations.  Huskies in general are not just loyal to one man but independence is part of their charm and they are non-discriminating companions.

They are very low maintenance.  If given the proper diet and the required vet care, which includes vaccinations, they are naturally clean and do not have body odor or parasites.  To maintain them you should include excercise, regular dental care, toenail trimming and brushing.   They will shed once or twice a year and because of the thickness of their coats the brushing will keep them beautiful and sleek.  It is important not to over feed as they require small portions of food for their size.  Their original makeup was to work over long distances in cold weather and at the proper weight they will live a long and happy life.

An enclosed area is REQUIRED to curb their desire and need to run.  They do need excercise but by nature they are not the type of dog that will stay in one area by choice.  Keeping them excercised reduces the need for exploring.  The husky does love to dig and you can either allow him a place to do this or use stategy to distract him.  They are easily trained, especially the younger you start.  It is better to do this with a gentle voice and encouragement and with no severe phyical punishments.  Training in the first year of their life will leave you with a faithful family companion.   While the Siberian is a gentle dog that is friendly with people and other dogs you need to be aware of any small animals that their instincts as predators might be alerted.  Examples are:  hamsters, guinea pigs, squirrels, and cats.  With the extreme amount of intelligence and their nature they are patient, fast and cunning in their hunting.
