Coastal Defences of Narragansett Bay in World War II

It seems like everywhere you go around southern Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island you find some kind of fort, some kind of gun emplacement, some kind of massive bastion. They played such a vital role in protecting the United States during World War II. Serving not only to destroy the enemy on a whim, but as a deterrent to ensure that they never even come close. They could have been 6 inch or 8 inch turrets, .30 or .50 caliber machine guns or a massive casemate housing twin 16 inch guns. They all served the same important purpose.

We must also remember those to whom this site is dedicated: the brave soldiers and sailors of the Rhode Island National Guard, United States Army, and United States Navy who were at a constant standby to fulfill their duties and fire upon the enemy. My team and I offer our sincerest thank you.

Who Are We?

There is no single source of information on the World War Two Coastal Defenses of Narragansett Bay anywhere on the internet. You find little bits and pieces of it here and there and you may come across a book called Defenses of Narragansett Bay in World War II by Walter K. Schroder which is a great wealth of information but you can never find a single source that everyone can access from their computer. That’s our mission. To bring the information to you. The book I mentioned doesn’t even cover the current condition of the installations. That’s our other half. Some of these massive casemates you can still see today. We’ll give you information on where they are so you can look yourself. And if you cant, we’ve got pictures. We put it all in one place.

I’m not even from the Narragansett Bay area. My family and I have been going camping in Fisherman’s Memorial State Park on Point Judith every year for around 12 years. It was only a few short years ago that I really became interested on the massive underground “bunker” staring me in the face. It was only this year that I started really researching not only Fort Greene but all the other coastal defenses that we had the chance to go see. I literally walked around the campground and any other installation with my GPS in one hand and a camera in the other, marking and photographing EVERYTHING that had something to do with this topic. And I assure you that EVERYTHING that I gathered, weather pointless or vital is on this website.

I am also currently putting together a team of researches to help me with this. If anyone has any information that they would be willing to share of know of a place that I can find some information please let me know at eagleo-10@seusa-geocaching.org. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
