South Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II, when it annexed the territory. In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Namibia won its independence in 1990 and has been governed by SWAPO since. Hifikepunye POHAMBA was elected president in November 2004 in a landslide victory replacing Sam NUJOMA who led the country during its first 14 years of self rule, and after retiring, he was bestowed with the honourable title of 'The Father of the Namibian Nation’. Population is about 2,030.69, of which about 85000 are persons with disabilities with +18000 Deaf and Hard of hearings: note: estimates for this country explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; this can result in the number to be inaccurate at the present time. |
At Uncle and the Deaf in Namibia, much is to be learned about Uncle's journey as a Deaf himself through out the schooling system to University, my achievements, my dreams and more. Moreover, I would like to expose the life of the Deaf persons in Namibia, starting with life at home, in the community, school and job market.
A lot of information is also available about the whole picture of the Deaf People in Namibia in general, more focuses is however, on education and employment, social life and promotion of Namibian Sign Language. Information about HIV/AIDS awareness, Deaf awareness and more... this Web will be the information sharing source about Deafness and Deaf in Namibia. I‘m pessimistically hope that I will be able to keep it updated on the issues that affect and of national concerns. Not only this webpage will focus on Deaf but all the Disability issues in and around the region should also be looked at.
In the blog, I will keep it pumped with the events that are happening concerning or involving Deaf and other Disabilities in Namibia. It’s not so new to many of us out there to acknowledge that the disabled ones are by far marginalised when it comes to social standard and equality... I may go as far to point out that many a time once a person go for particular service, his/her abilities are assessed merely by the physical disability, and one end up being sidelined without further assessments. this practice has been the worst causes of many disabled persons to be unemployed because the employers feel it would be a waste of time hiring such a particular person, but believe me you " don't judge the book by its cover'. This is very true. When I once went to the national Deaf Association and talked about my blind friend who is also a student at Varsity helping me with typing my assignments, all rose and challenged me to tell nothing but the truth...'how can a blind man type? Where has he learned to master computers? How can he see the keyboards?' these were the questions put to me, but I assured them that, that doesn’t deter him a single effort to do so even faster than a private secretary.
this has so far been proven, the Deaf officials make time out one lunch to come to the University and I proudly took them to my blind friend who simple wrote....' what you see is what you can believe than hearsays' within a very short time without an error in his typing... haven't I told you so??
One case is when I once went to take a test for my Learner's license.... the official on duty kept making excuses... Such as 'you can't hear, you will just cause lots of trouble in the road, you will crash the car etc... Up to such point that I was tired to explain how I think I can drive without his anticipated accidents happening... I straightened up, look him in the eyes and ask... Officer... 'Does this means all the cars involved in accidents in your back yard was the work of the Deaf men?’ what more? He agreed to ask me questions on condition that I don't fail 3 out of 5... What more else I didnt fail more that 5 out of total signs and questions he asked me and of course I passed. So please give the disabled ones a test of time, not just to turn them out because they are disabled... our slogan is 'disability doesn't mean inability'.
