Chamonix , July 2002
This year saw me make a visit to Chamonix in the French Alps for the very first time.
For this I will be forever in the debt of a friend, Richard Sawyer, who encouraged me to go along with him, and with extreme patience, put up with my lack of Alpine experience.
I saw views that I will never forget, especially in the Vallee Blanche, I have never seen such awesome beauty, towering peaks or "aguilles" in every direction, a sky as blue as blue can be, and sparkling sun on snow and ice--unforgettable.
A first Alpine rock climb on the Index route on the Aguille Rouge, a glacier walk on the famous Mer de Glace, a mixed rock/snow/ice climb on Le Petite Verte high above Argentiere are days forever imprinted on my mind.
Richard's knowledge of Chamonix and it's history is amazing, he has inspired me to return there-and all being well I will.
The photographs included in these pages can never do justice to the landscape especially the beautiful Le Lac Blanc, which is so easy to get to you feel that you have not deserved to see such a place with so little effort.
If ever there is a "must see" location it has to be the Chamonix Valley. |
