Caleb’s Branch is a welcoming spot for a man to sit and reflect on his life. Two men at opposite ends of the twentieth century share a special moment out of time. In this natural cathedral they seek guidance, revelation and, perhaps, a little absolution. One struggles to release the bitter memories of his father while the other struggles to capture the sweet memories of his son. It is the accumulation of cultural inhibitions, prejudices, and ignorance that cause both men in both times to struggle with their understanding of what it means to be a man in his own time!

Beneath the glistening surface reflecting the time-stilled passing of seasons and celestial light, a chaotic microcosm of constant recreation is taking place. While one man struggles to maintain self-imposed emotional barriers that keep love out, another faces an equally demanding challenge when he allows love in. Like the gently flowing water in that placid little stream passing through time as casually as does starlight; constantly refreshed and new, but present from the primordial beginning; the emotions shared by Edmond Argyle Armstrong and Caleb’s daddy are as declarative of the male existence as is the Y chromosome and as irrefutable as the cosmic laws of physics.

Who would have known that one summer, in the sleepy town of East Palo Alto, California, would lead to so many secrets… some good… some not so good. The “master plan” was all that the six of us ever wanted to accomplish! But things just kept getting in the way. After all, 1959 was a great year to be alive, young, innocent and sure that we were all invincible and destined to accomplish great things.

Roadhouse’s accident was horrible and should have been some type of omen as to what was to take place that summer! Smoking “stogies,” the blaring siren of the fire truck, “water bombs” in the city bus, Putsy losing his tail, discovering the awful secret at poor Frankie’s house, being banned from our sacred tree, Bob blowing up his own hand and the raiding of gardens were some of the “not so good” events that took place that summer. On the other hand, there were no more babysitters during the weekdays…we were finally on our own! There were barbecues with all the relatives, homemade ice cream, a raise in allowance, Christmas in July, the Chinese Market, the “rec center,” and our clubhouse with the secret oaths.
