Welcome to the Danger on Deception Island walkthrough! If you are new to these games, choose Junior Detective at the Game selection menu. If you choose to do Senior Detective, that's fine as well. ;) However, this walkthrough is written for the Junior Detective.

The game starts as Katie talks to Nancy about the orca and that her boat has been ransacked! You'll have to get to the bottom of this. Nancy will unpack. Go forward and look at the sink. Try to turn the water on. You'll not be able to. You will need to fix the pipes. This is what they look like when you finish:

Pipe Puzzle when complete

Look at the Whale World business card, then close the cabinet and turn to your left. Go up the stairs, then open the cabinet under the microscope. You'll need to get all of the books to fit back in the drawer. This is what it looks like when you're done:

Then close the drawer and talk to Katie. Ask her about Andy Jason. Then turn to your left and go upstairs. Look at Katie's GPS. Doesn't look like it's in working condition. Tell her about the GPS, then go biking (be sure to take your helmet :D) to the Hot Kettle Cafe. Talk to Mr. Holt Scotto.

He says that he'll give you the GPS if you pass his quiz. Here are the answers:
  1. The sun always sets in the west.
  2. What is the current fine for clamming without a permit in Snake Horse Harbor? $138.43
  3. The left side of a boat is its port side.
  4. The moon always rises in the east.
  5. What does this mean in Morse Code: ...- --- - . ....- .... --- .-.. -? Vote 4 Holt
  6. The North Star is part of what constellation? Ursa Minor
  7. A schooner is a boat with at least two masts.
  8. What is the name of the knot below? Fisherman
  9. What kind of knot is it? bend

Great. Now you have to bring him a male Dungeness Crab. First, talk to Jenna Deblin. She owns the Hot Kettle and is famous for her clam chowder. Ask her about Andy Jason and she'll eventually let you try some. Then bike to the lighthouse. Turn to the right and you'll see a rock that you can lift. Move it back and pick up the crab behind it. If its belly looks like this:

Then you've got a male. If not, and the belly is fatter, you have a female. Keep trying until you get a male, then go forward. Go up the stairs and you'll see the lighthouse. Look at the combination lock. Holt will chase you out. Hmmm...

Take the male crab back to Holt. He'll give you a GPS. Take it to Katie's boat. Go past the boat until you reach the kayak. Put on the helmet and the lifevest, then take the bottle that's floating in the water. There's a message inside-an odd one.

Get into the kayak. Go forward until you see a message in a bottle floating in the water. Take it out of the water and read the message. Then go forward until you see some rocks in front of you. Turn to the left and go forward until you see buoy number 6 in front of you. Turn to the left and go forward unti lyou see another buoy. Turn to the right and go forward until you see buoy 12. Turn to your left and go forward. You'll see another buoy. Turn to your left and go forward into the caves.

The cave will split. Choose the left side that empties into a circular part. Take the bottle out of the water, then head back to the mainland. The lighthouse, to be exact. When you get there turn to your left and pick up three rocks from the pile. Then go forward past the stairs to the lighthouse and look at the bottle that's wedged between the rocks:

You'll have to get it out. Skip the rock like this:

The messages are coordinates. Get out your GPS and click on Make New. Enter the coordinates.

A new waypoint will be created! Go to Katie's boat and get in the kayak. Be sure to put on your life vest! Go forward until you reach rocks, then turn to the left. Go forward until you see buoy 6, then turn to your right. Go forward to the beach.

Go forward until you are at the far side of the beach. You'll see some green seaweed. Uncover the seashell. The flags must be pushed in to spell Rosebud, like this:

Inside you'll see a funny story, a letter, and a paper with P's and S's on it. Take the blue paper, then read the letter. At the bottom of the funny story, type: Ask HS AJ JD for Hilda's gift.

Go to the Hot Kettle and ask Holt about his gift. He'll tell you to do a chess puzzle for him first. In Junior Detective, the answers are Q to D6 and Q to D8. In Senior Detective, they are R to F5, R to F7.

Look at the chess book in his duffel. You'll see a purple piece of paper with 3-4-7-5 written on it. This is the code to get into the lighthouse. Give him the chess puzzle and he'll show you his present. Then talk to Jenna about hers. She needs clams, so you'll have to go clamming for you. You'll need to get a clamming permit from Andy, so bike to Whale World.

Ask him for a permit and he'll ask you to put together a puzzle of Caddy. This is what it looks like when you're all done:

Tell Andy that you're finished and he'll give you a permit. Then turn to the right and enter the exhibit. Turn to your right and go over to the touch screen computers. Look where it says, "Insert key card here." Click beneath it and Nancy will say, "Looks like I need a key card to play."

Get a card from Andy, then go back to the computers. Choose the computer on the right. Choose start. The questions are (not necessarily in this order):

  1. Megaptera novaeangeliae is the scientific name for the Humpback whale.
  2. The cetacean that can swim the fastest is the Dall's Porpoise.
  3. Sea mammals, including dolphins and killer whales, have been trained by the military because they are extremely intelligent.
  4. Orcas are called "Killer whales" because they kill and eat other whales.
  5. How many blowholes do baleen whales have? Two.
  6. The diet of baleen whales consists mostly of: small fish and plankton.
  7. The diet of toothed whales consists mostly of: small fish and other animals.
  8. The throats of the baleen whales commonly seen around Deception Island are always grooved.
  9. An example of a baleen whale is: All of the above.
  10. Toothed whales do not posess: All of the above.

Then look at the other computer. This game is easy: guide the whale around, let him eat fish, avoid predators, trash, and mines, and be sure to come up for air. You'll win with ease.

Once you win, turn around and go to your right. Go to the audio station. The matches are:

1-Gray Whale
2-Humpback whale
3-Minke whale
4-Killer whale
5-Dall's porpoise

Then turn around and go to the game called Feeding Frenzy. The goal is to "feed" 15 whales using the fish. It's not a hard game; just try until you get it. Once you complete it, turn to your left until you see the "Whale" of fortune. Enter your card and you'll get...a whale watching tour! Talk to Andy and he'll take you on it.

After the tour, ask Andy to see the keychain design. He'll give you a keychain. Look at the design. Then bike to the lighthouse. We're going to go clamming! Yay! Since the specific location of the clams is different in each game, I can't tell you exactly where they are.

How to clam:
  1. Take out your clamming tube and scan the beach for holes. Your tube will form a red outline around it when you move your mouse over one.
  2. Zoom in on the hole and click on it with your tube.
  3. A clam may come out, or various other items. Note-you can go back to holes you've already "dug."

Now then, when you find four clams at the lighthouse, get in the kayak and go to the secret beach. Things are a little trickier here. When you reach this point:

You'll notice that you can go left. Do so and you'll be looking at some rocks. You need to jump to the sandbar. There's a catch, however. If you don't jump on the correct rocks, Nancy will slip and fall. Here are the correct rocks in order:

When you get to the sandbar, there are two places where you can clam. If neither hole yields a clam, come back later. Clam at the secret beach until you have 15 clams that you can take back to Jenna. Note-some people just can't get it, and it's not their fault. Most of them are XP users. But, of course, not all of the time. If you are having trouble clamming, you can download a patch here from Her Interactive.

When you are finished clamming, take the clams back to Jenna. She'll tell you that her cafe has been robbed! Sounds like boat parts were stolen! She'll let you look around, but first, turn to your left and look at the first booth. There's a colorful box there that wasn't there before. Click on it. You'll have to click on the squares and make pairs for each screen. When you've matched screen one, move to screen two; etc.

Once you finish, the box will open to yield the necklace. Then turn to your left and go forward to the window. Then turn to your right. Look at this panel:

Lift it and you will see a card puzzle. Get the cards to look like this, a royal flush:

Nancy will say, "I made a royal flush" when you have completed the puzzle. But wait-there are three more. One for each suit. Close the panel and turn to your right. Step over to the front door. Look at the panel to the right of the door:

Arrange the cards in this order:

Then turn to your right and click on the panel between these two chairs:

Arrange the cards as such:

Then, turn to your left and enter the room where the party was taking place before (here's a picture to refresh your memory).

Turn to your right and look at the disheveled storage area. Click on the SaveKing label. Close the door then turn around. Turn to the right and look at the panel above a booth:

Arrange the cards like this:

You will then hear gears grinding. Nancy will say, "What was that?" Then back up and look at the table to your right with spilled salt on it. Click on it and a secret passage will open! Try to descend into the passage and Nancy will say, "I can't see a thing! I'm gonna need a flashlight." Using your bike, head over to Katie's boat and talk to her. She'll ask for something to eat. Turn to your right and look at the boat parts from...SaveKing? which are to the left of the stairs.

We need to talk to her about it, but first, walk down the stairs and turn to your right. Open the refridgerator and make Katie a sandwich. However, be sure to stay away from the jellyfish preserves, the baking soda, the moldy cheese, and the very expired mayonnaise (Expiration date: 1994!).

Take the sandwich to Katie and she'll give you the flashlight. Then ask her about SaveKing and the boat parts. She'll get a little ticked. Bike to the lighthouse, and go to the lighthouse itself. You'll see falling rock. Look up or Nancy will get beaned by the falling rock. Then step toward the lighthouse and enter the code: 3-4-7-5. Open the door and enter.

Turn to the left and look at the old stove. Move your cursor to the top of the screen like this:

And click. Open the panel in the back and pull the lever. Then close the panel and turn to your right. Climb up the stairs. Look at the morse code transmitter, the calendar, and the signal lamp. Click on the shutters of the signal lamp. Nancy will say, "It's rusted shut."

Climb back down the stairs. Exit the lighthouse and turn to your right. Open the concrete door and go down the stairs. Go over to the table and pick up the pack of lightbulbs. Take the second lightbulb from the right. The rest are dead. Then turn to your right and look at the door. Click on it until some dragon pieces appear. Then raise the two middle pieces like this:

You'll hear a click. Then go to Katie's boat. Turn on Nancy's laptop and click on Anagram Buster. When Nancy enters the letters, click OK. If you want to you can do the manual unscramble. But for the ones of us that are lazy (that's me, I'll admit.), click auto-buster and scroll through the options. When you see Telephone Number, click on it.

Then head to the Hot Kettle to explore the passageway. Go to the table with the spilled salt and click on it. Descend into the tunnel (be sure to get out your headlamp). At the bottom of the stairs, turn around. Go to your right. Then go forward until you reach a fork in front of you and turn to the right again. Go forward a few steps and the game will take over. Nancy will make a few comments about a long walk.

When she stops walking, go forward until you reach a door. Take a bottle of spray. Then pull the lever to the right of the door. It will open. You will hear a pinging noise, exactly like the one you hear at the back of the lighthouse. That's because you are under the lighthouse. Wow. Long tunnel, if it goes all the way from the hot kettle to the lighthouse. Look at the door and click until you see the rest of the serpent that was in the lighthouse. Raise the two middle pieces up and enter the lighthouse.

Look at the new passageway that has opened in the lighthouse. It's a new passageway in the seacaves! You'll see another serpent puzzle. You'll get to it later. For now, enter the tunnels and go back the way you came to the Hot Kettle. Then go to the lighthouse by bike.

Go forward then to your left. Pass the lighthouse stairs then keep going out this way:

Until you reach a piece of wood. Pick up the wood. Then ask Katie about it. She'll give you a number to call. Call Casey. He's rather eccentric...although that's putting it lightly. Anyways, he needs to know what kind of wood it is.

Remember at the very beginning of the game when you did that book puzzle? Open the drawer and pull out the book on wood. At the very end of the book there is a number you can call. Click on the number. Before you call, however, take a look at Katie's microscope. Click on the white rectangle to the right of the microscope to slice a piece of wood. Then click on the slide to make a slide.

Then look at it under the microscope and call Dr. Predoviciu and ask her about the wood. When she asks you some questions, answer them like this:

Is the wood sample black, brown or yellow? Brownish
Brown-brown or brown-reddish? Brown-reddish
Does the sample have many holes, a couple, or none at all? Many
And are there some holes that are big and some that are small, or are they all the same size? All the same size
And the holes are really, really tiny, right? No, they're pretty sizeable
Are there any distinguishable horizontal lines on the sample? Yes, there are horizontal lines

She'll tell you that the wood sample is Luan. All right, time to call Casey. Tell him about the wood sample, then go to the lighthouse. You'll need to send Nancy's cell phone number (523-555-4399) to Hilda from the lighthouse in Morse Code. Climb up to the messy area. De-rust the shutters of the signal lamp and insert the bulb. Flip the switch to make sure that it works. Then look at the morse code transmitter. Enter:
.....  (5)
..---  (2)
...--  (3)
.....  (5)
.....  (5)
.....  (5)
....-  (4)
...--  (3)
----.  (9)
----.  (9)

Then press [SEND]. The message will flash to Hilda. Step back and start down the stairs. Hilda will call you. She tells you that she's sent you an e-mail. Go to Katie's boat and look at Nancy's laptop. Click mail and read the letter from Hilda. She's sent you a set of new coordinates. Problem is, some of the numbers are missing. That's no problem. Here are the new coordinates to enter into the GPS:

Latitude: 48 42.485
Longitude: 123 08.735

Now that you have the coordinates, click Create Waypoint, then head out in your kayak. To get to the waypoint: go forward until you reach rocks, then turn to the left. Paddle forward once, then turn to the left. Go forward until you see a barrel in the water. Take the Zap Tech inside and Hilda will call and tell you your next mission in the form of a poem. Below ground... Now where do we know that's below ground? ;) The tunnels under the Kettle of course! Bike to the Kettle (talk to Jenna or Holt if you want), then open the tunnel.

Remember the door where you got the spray? Go there. But before you step very close to the door, turn to your left, like this:

You will see the anvil shaped rock that Hilda was talking about. Zoom in on it, then move your cursor to the top of the screen and you'll see an up arrow:

You will see a new opening. This is where the paper with all of the P's and S's will come in handy. Hoist yourself into the opening. Get out the paper:

Each P stands for Port, which in sailor talk, means left. Each S stands for Starboard, which means right. Now, the directions are for each turn in the tunnel. Follow the path until you reach a large rock with more coordinates on it and the ZapTech symbol. You'll have to go above ground to enter the coordinates, so exit the tunnels via the Hot Kettle.

If you did not write down the coordinates, here they are to enter:

Latitude: 48 42.522
Longitude:123 08.799

Click Create Waypoint once you enter the coordinates. A new waypoint will be shown on the GPS. Head over to Katie's boat and get in the kayak. The waypoint is right in front of buoy #8, the one with graffiti on it. Take out the Zap Tech once you're there and click on the front of Nancy's kayak. Take the binoculars out of the box and Hilda will call.

She'll tell you to look at Andy's boat in the bottle with your binoculars. So bike to Whale World. It will be closed, so call Casey. He'll tell you some information about the shipreck. Then enter Whale World and turn to your right until you see the boat in the bottle. Use the binoculars to take a really close look at the bottle. You'll see symbols exactly like the ones on the Caddy puzzle in the sea caves!

Now, go to the lighthouse and go to the serpent puzzle in the seacaves. Press this button:

Then turn the dials like this:

You will see some gears. Pull the handle and a new passageway will be revealed! You must get to it by kayak. Once in the kayak, go to the seacaves and to the new opening. Go forward in the passageway until you see some equipment and crates. Get up on the ledge and clumsy Nancy will knock over a SCUBA tank. Uh-oh. What's this? The orphaned orca will surface and knock the container back to Nancy!

Play catch with it if you wish, then look at the crates. These crates are made from the same wood that Nancy found on the beach! Then look at the harness, and *gasp* Katie's gloves! You'll need to confront her about them. Get back in the kayak and head out of the sea caves. Bess and George will call you. Talk to them, then go back to the dock. You'll find that Katie's boat is not there!

Go to the Hot Kettle and ask Holt Scotto to take you out on his boat. He'll refuse. Ask Jenna, then finally Andy, who will take you to the smuggler's boat. Kayak to the side of the boat, then climb up the metal ladder. When you are almost at the top, you will hear some voices speaking.

Once at the top, climb over the railing and turn to your left:

Go forward. You will hear some footsteps, so very quickly, turn to your left and hide behind a crate:

You'll hear some men talking about beef jerky. When they are finished talking, turn to your right. Nancy will look in one of the crates and see animal furs. So that's what the ship was smuggling. Go forward. You'll hear footsteps again. Turn to your right and hide behind the barrels:

Go forward and turn to your right. Then turn around and go forward. You'll hear footsteps another time, so turn to your right and hide behind a large pillar:

After you hear men talking about Hilda's notebook on Benjamin Hawkins, go forward and go down the stairs into the hold of the ship. Open the door and you'll see the orca in a tank. Follow the path around the tank until you reach another door. Enter and see Katie sitting down and-uh oh.-bound and gagged!

Take the gag off of Katie and let her tell her story. when she's close to finished, you'll hear footsteps. Again. You'll need to hide. Turn to your left and hide behind the crates.

The view will shift and you'll see *gasp* Andy! So he's the one who's behind this. You've got to stop him. He'll figure out that Nancy's here. Make a mad dash for the door. Run to the door that leads to the stairs. The door will shut and lock on Nancy!

When Andy gets done talking to you, pick up the SCUBA tank and throw it into the whale's pen. The whale will bonk it back and hit Andy in the head.

Way to go, detective! You've solved Danger on Deception Island!
