I'm Elvie an umbrella cockatoo. I hatched from my egg April 1, 1993 "April fools day" Wow! did I fool them! My momma and daddy adopted me when I was a baby. Momma says, I was an adorable baby boy. She even has some cute baby pictures of me. They took me home in a corvette. I was such a sweet baby boy. I'm still very adorable and charismatic. I quickly stole their hearts. They take me a lot of places with them. (Now, it's just mommy and me since my daddy went to heaven). We go to art shows, car shows, I get to go to the post office, we go for walks along the beach, hikes in the mountains, vacations, visit family and friends and for picnics at the park. I even get to taste a little bit of yogurt when we sit outside at the ice cream shop. Sometimes, she takes me to school to visit second and third graders. They get to learn all about me and my needs. We have a lot of fun doing things together.
I like my name, when I meet a stranger I am sure to say "Hello" then "Hi Elvie" that way you know my name and what to call me. I might even greet you by saying "Hi Love". My mama has a lot of names for me, she says " Hi Elvie" "Hi Love" "Mommas Baby" "Good Boy""Pretty Bird" Mama says, she "loves the baby" that's me! I am a pretty good talker too. My mom tries to fulfill my needs as a companion cockatoo since my choices to be free and fly in the wild have never existed she understands she must furnish me with other choices to make me thrive in a captive environment.
My daddy was a very special person in my life. I liked to perch on his lap, he had a special touch that makes me feel happy when he gently scratched my back and under my wings. I even pick up my wing so he would keep rubbing under them, it felt so good. I love my daddy a lot, miss him now that he is gone. I've always been a mommas baby, she says I am her soft fluffy cuddle boy. I like to play catch the ball with my with anyone that wants to play. I get cardboard boxes to play in and chew into little pieces. That is lots of fun! I have lots of fun chewing wooden blocks too. When I chew them up she always has more for me.
"If you think you want a cute cockatoo"
If you are not used to being around cockatoos and think you want one because we are so cute. Stop and do all your homework first because cockatoos are a very special species and it takes a very dedicated person to become our companion. We are not just a pet we are a true life long companion that requires a lot of companionship, love, good care, proper diet, and lots of toys to play and interact with and we love family outings and vacations. I also get to spend most of my day playing in and out of my cage or on my manzanita tree. Cockatoos can have the intelligence of a 5 year old and the emotions of a toddler. Channeling those emotions with constructive ideas and building good play habits are extremely important.
