Myrtle's Caribou Hair Sculptures

Unique Aboriginal Art

Unique Aboriginal Art Form

The art form of caribou hair tufting began and remains an aboriginal art form which is still very popular today. Myrtle has taken this art form and enhanced the possibilities by creating unique pieces of art by sculpting in three dimensional layers to achieve a new look and a new form. Myrtle holds the copyright on this art form which also includes her designs, so if you are wanting to replicate her work you must have permission from her before you proceed. The caribou hide is sculptured three dimensionally to create these unique masterpieces and are arranged on black velvet. Her work is here to enjoy and to purchase. Please feel free to place an order. She has shipped to many international destinations. Should you have any questions regarding custom orders please contact the address below.

About the Artist

Myrtle deMeulles was born in 1941, one of 12 Metis children.  Myrtle spent most of her life on the trap line in Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, Canada.  She learned to speak English in a convent with the St. Joseph Nuns.  Her orginal language is Cree. She grew up on the trap line with bannock and fried moose meat until she attended school and the convent education was foreign to her and her culture.  Myrtle left her home and made her way at a young age to The Pas, Manitoba where she lived with a sister and went to school.  In 1956 she moved to Churchill to live with her sister Lily and it was there that she has made her home with Robert deMeulles.  Myrtle has done many jobs but in 1981 she had the opportunity to work with Keith Rawlings and the Arctic Trading Company.  It was her passion as well as Keith Rawlings to preserve the culture of the people of the North through arts and crafts.

Myrtle started with the art form of caribou hair tufting and although a beautiful art form it was limited in scope.  Myrtle applied artistic creativity and created a very unique art form now known as Myrtle's Caribou Hair Sculptures.  Myrtle has the copyright on this art form and we would ask that you not produce any of her designs without expressed written permission from her.  Myrtle has been copyrighted since 1989.  She has sold her pieces all over the world.

Order Today!

Myrtle can sell these pieces in their original state ready for you to frame yourself to fit your décor or she can send framed and ready for display.   Shadow box framing is often the preferred choice as the three dimensional affect does not fit standard glass frames.  These pieces however look fantastic with the glass removed and larger frame panels. Framing will cost extra.
