Let me ask you this, did you find little victories on your kids contentment, a smile, a giggle, a simple "Thanks Ma" or "You're the best Dad". This is what every family should focus on. The little victories from  straight-from-the-heart appreciation from your kids and even the small kisses that your spouse gives you. It's time to give that kind of focus on your family. The rewards are way beyond words can say. The feeling of contentment is undescribably good. Appreciate the little victories that you earned for being the best mom and dad in the world in the eyes of your kids.

Focus on the Family

Have you ever thought about why the divorce rate is so high, or why the news is filled with so many stories of child neglect, spousal assaults and teenage crimes? I enjoy listening to our grandparents, and their opinions on todays issues. They grew up in a different era than we have today, and their points of view are both interesting and thought provoking. Some seniors are quick to blame todays problems on the economy, and all the materialism that surrounds us today. Others think todays problems stem from the lack of focus on our family and our values. I believe it’s a combination of both. I think many people in todays society are obsessed with getting ahead. Both parents are working to keep up in todays economic times, and some parents are working more than sixty hours a week. Children are being raised in day-cares, and teenagers are coming home to empty houses. I believe that to have a strong and healthy family; you have to make the time to nurture your family relationships. (Both husband and wife, parent and child)

There was a time that my husband and I were both buried in our work. We spent minimal time together as a family, and no time together as a couple. We didn’t have our priorities right. Our marriage and the relationships with our children were falling apart. My grandmother once said that it is important to find a healthy balance between your work, your family, and your values. I was quick to answer her, saying that in the 90’s that’s easier said than done! You won’t hear me admit this very often, but “I was wrong.”

In order to save our marriage, my husband and I had to change our focus. My husband still works full time, but I chose to cut down on my hours of work. That was the easy part though, learning the difference between our ‘needs’ and our ‘wants’ was much harder. Having less money means you can’t afford to get caught up in the materialism that surrounds us today. We now make quality time to spend together as a family, and we take time out to nurture our own relationship. We may have fewer material possessions, but we have a much healthier and happier family.
