Symbols
There are many in the traditional Reiki Schools who teach that the symbols and mantras are to be kept secret and shared only with those who have received the attunements to run Reiki. But I have found that the symbols are not, and never have been secret. They have been used in Buddhist Teachings for Centuries, and are displayed openly on the walls of many Buddhist Temples.
The symbols do not contain any power themselves, but are useful tools for connecting to the energies and for help in focusing your intent. It is believed that Mikao Usui introduced the symbols into his teaching to help those who had previously had little spiritual training.
In Reiki l, we are taught to activate Reiki by intent only, it is only when the emotional and distance energies are introduced in Level ll that we use symbols to help focus on the different energies.
Most people find that they can activate the energies by intention alone after a while, and so stop using the symbols.
