Michael - My Special One

Welcome to our little corner of the world. Some call it autism, others call it despair and sorrow. I happen to call it hope, beauty and fascination. Our little world is by no means easy, at anytime things can go horribly wrong -- just like in real life -- but I would not change my son and wish he were 'normal'. I happen to think the incredible world my son lives in is a world few can join, and his experiences far exceed a neurotypical's comprehension. Michael, age nine, is a brillant child who could read before he could talk, draw beautiful pictures before he could smile. Truly gifted, he shows others there is an unharnessed creativity within the autistic spectrum, and not just rote memories, but unique insight into the human condition. Perhaps one day the rest of us can join in....

This website is about my son Michael in an effort to illustrate to others that autism is not such a nasty word after all. Some beautiful things can come of it. I do not want Autism to be 'cured' but understood. Understanding is the key to all differences and until that concept is realized and celebrated, autism will continue to sound like a death knoll to a parent, when in reality, it is the door to what the human mind is capable of being.

Michael is a high-functioning child diagnosed with Autism. It is not Aspergers, but for him an advanced state of mind that can draw, create poetry, read, write stories and sing. He is also well advanced intellectually. He did not say his first word until he was two, but drew triangles at age one and a half. He does not play with toys, but enjoys multiplication, geometry and rudimentary algebra. He does not watch television but can draw what he sees in his own world with astonishing detail and originality. This is the son I love and he too, loves me. My name is Veronica Mowery. I and my sons (Michael and Daniel) live in a world a little different from the rest --
And we like it just fine!!

$1.00 Goes a long way in our household, we live without cable TV, a car or fast food. We live simply so that others may simply live. If you wish to donate a dollar we would be very grateful, Thank you.

"The clouds are breathing in the sky..." Michael, age six.
