MY ISETTA

My Isetta was in a sorry state when purchased, I neither had the time, skills nor finances to restore my car to a roadworthy condition, so a light  cosmetic restoration was undertaken instead.

The underside, including the wheel arches and engine compartment ( the engine came separately) were subjected to much rubbing down with a wire brush and abrasive paper then painted with either smoothrite or anti rust primer.

All of the trim, the seat and a floor mat with multiple tears were removed and overtook the garden shed to facilitate work inside the car.

The inside of the car was rubbed down and painted with anti rust primer. I had to exercise caution regarding the position of my feet as the floor allowed daylight through in places. I measured the area from the door back to the battery box and purchased a sheet of steel cut to size. After drilling and painting this was bolted to the original floor.

The whole car at some point in it's life had been repainted and the instroment unit matched. I sprayed the unit with Rover Arum White. The wheels were painted the same colour and new hubcaps fitted.

Certain areas had to be filled. The inside of the car was painted pastel yellow. The interior trim panels had been recovered at some point in the cars past and were badly deteriated. The covering was removed and replaced with a light coloured vinyl..The same vinyl was used to recover the sunroof as this had a number of holes. The door trim panel wasn't in quite so bad condition so was retained.

The seat legs were rubbed down and painted with black smoothrite. A cut to size old bed sheet was glued to the underside of the seat to contain the crumbling foam. I made up and fitted a tartan seat cover. Also the interior received a new floor mat and gear stick knob.

After rubbing down the exterior of the car it was painted pastel yellow with white on part of the door. A BMW badge was fitted.
