3D Programs
Blender3D -
A 3D modeling & animation, game engine with basic collision and physics ( I think, one or both of these) and compiler all in one! The scripting it uses is python. All this, for free!

If you do not see the New Render Menu in GMAX that is because you use a Custom UI and not the default gmax ui! Go to Customize->Load UI Scheme->Select MNU as Filetyp below->Load MaxMenus.mnu
The Gimp -
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

You can use your 3D work here, though it may take a longer process to do. You have to use sprite sheets for this.
