THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!
We would like to thank everyone who participated in
the 3rd annual Bob Veillette 5K Road Race and Walk on Sunday, Sept.
14, 2008, at Library Park in Waterbury, Conn.
More than 100 walkers and 248 runners took part,
helping the event raise more than $20,000, a truly amazing show of generosity
even before factoring in the difficult economic climate.
In
addition to those who participated, we would also like to send out a special
thank you to our volunteers and sponsors. Without you, this event simply would
not be possible.
The event included a 5K run, a 5K walk, a shorter
1K walk and, for the first time this year, a Kids Fun Run for children 10 and
younger. It also included a Kids Tent — with arts, crafts, bubbles, face painting
and Tony the Magic Man — as well as a DJ and a sponsor expo.

This volunteer-run event is put on by Bob Veillette’s friends and family. Bob is
the former managing editor of the Republican-American newspaper in Waterbury.
He suffered a massive stroke in April 2006 that
left him cognizant but completely paralyzed with the rare condition known as
“locked-in syndrome,” which was also suffered by the subject of the 2007 film,
“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” Before the stroke, Bob was an avid runner
and well known in greater Waterbury and the Naugatuck Valley as an accomplished
jazz pianist.
Proceeds
from this annual race help pay for Bob’s medical care, so he may continue to
stay at home with his wife Bonnie instead of living in a nursing home. Over the
past three years, this event has raised more than $85,000, funds that have
played a critical role in allowing Bob to live at home where he and his family
want him to remain.
Thank you
to everyone who played a part in this extraordinary event. Hope to see you all again in 2009!
