In this setting of perhaps the most well known of the Psalms, I sought to convey in music the various images and emotions that the text evokes - from the still waters to the valley of the shadow of death. This piece, which is written for mezzo soprano, trumpet, marimba, and string quartet, should not be viewed as a vocal solo with instrumental accompaniment. Though the singer literally delivers the text, the other instruments are equal partners that share in the delivery of the music.
Carl Holmquist is a sophomore Music Education and Theory/Composition major from Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Ever since his high school band director taught him to work on Finale, Carl has found time in his busy schedule to write music. He has written for concert band, brass quintet, string quartet, and various other ensembles. He aspires to direct band at the high school or college level and continue his compositional endeavors as long as he possibly can. Carl would also like to thank Carl Schroeder for all of his hard work in making this CD project a reality.
