Like No One is Listening...
I feel like the only girl out there on days like this. When I'm so trapped and alone, so lost, and afraid that my world will be sent under by the touch of a butterfly's wing. Its amazing, really, when you think about it. Each and everyday that we get up, we focus on the outer, superficial world that has been our home for so long. We (girls) carefully critique our bodies and faces in the mirror, attacking every critical misconstrued feature, each mistake, filling in each line of pain with another thought of those we better with our appearances. We spend HOURS primping, setting each hair in place, covering each blemish with top-of-the-line products and all the while wishing we were like Paris, Lindsay, Mary-Kate, all the 'perfect' ones. We cannot comprehend what gave them precedence over us in God's eyes. I lived this story for too long. One day I realized that I was pushing myself over the edge after the closure of my battle with an intricate combination of anorexia/bulimia that had nearly taken me beyond help. I heard the words in my brain, pelting my heart, and realized that with each word, I was shadowing the truth. I had only recently discovered the Barlowgirl, and band with whom I could really relate. One of their lesser known songs, Mirror, hit me HARD. I listened to the lyrics as tears slipped silently down my perfected face. I knew then what I wish I'd known for a long time before. I listened wholeheartedly, and let the metaphoric healing rain of the notes pour down on me, and I knew, for once, that I was beautiful. It was only weeks later that I came to grips with the one thing I'll never forget: Music is my only escape. I feel closer to God with each note, as my soul releases all the pain and hate through the angry words, the slow songs, the ones I can truly identify with. I never let go of who I was, the girl with the broken smile, only because I knew that she was a part of me that kept me from going back. I let it all out. For as long as I can remember, music was life. I sang everything I could think of, and noticed that all the time spent made me better. I made solos in school productions, and eventually realized that I had IT. The gift God promised us all, and mine was voice. The words flow so effortlessly, so perfectly, and flawless. I let the music take me away, away from here, this place of pain and hate. I never looked back. And I knew, only for a brief moment could I doubt. I had the chance. It was time to sing. Like no one was listening.

Tell Me About it.

Controversial Today

Today's world is FULL of young women and teenage girls who are seemingly perfect. They have the bodies, the hair, the smiles. Yet so few of them are actually IT. These girls are facing something so terrifying. They are dying of a deadly disease that has no cure. They are falling bottomlessly, literally killing themselves.

These girls have eating disorders.

Anorexia. The dictionary term does ana no justice. It is malicious, time, thought-consuming, pain that is endless. The body and mind are no longer in one accord. Mirror images are distorted, and obesity which is in reality an extreme thinness, is blatantly visible. Starvation is all that can be desired, racing against the biological clock for perfection. Many strive to have the model body, others, death. But both will never reach the utopia they desire. Restricted amounts of calories are taken in, and the number grows smaller until the body is allotted so few calories that the vital organs are shut down slowly, and the cause of death is usually related to a cardiovascular meltdown.

Bulimia. Mia is a fatal friend. It seems much better than ana, since eating is actually REQUIRED. Binging, as a matter of fact, is a vital part of this problem. As much food as is possibly consumable is used to allow the stomach to feel it is not being deprived, and moments later, the mind is satisfied that it is keeping the weight at bay as the victim vomits the day's rations. There are a plethora of ways that this is achieveable. Foods that are brightly colored, such as Nacho Cheese Doritos, are used as markers to tell when all the food has been regurgitated, and various pills and even some foods that are widely available make the vomiting easy. Its simple to conceal; most girls visit the restroom after lunch at high schools across the country to touch up makeup, and over half a million throw up before hand.

What can we do to save these lives?

Apparently nothing. Google, Yahoo!, Ask Jeeves, and millions of other search engines are actually PROVIDING A WAY for these young women to find support and "helpful tips" that fuel their deadly desires. Websites such as 'Bluedragonfly' and 'Anas Grotto' give links to dieting journals, 'thinspirational' pictures of grossly underweight sufferers, and names of other websites that specialize in keeping these e.d.'s alive and kicking. So why not just shut down the web survers? "Its physically impossible," claims Kim Billand, Google Search technician, "there are just too many of them. Typing in certain keywords will get you thousands of hits in less than a minute!" Individual servers are actually made only for PROana/mia sites, and are somehow kept open through fault of an unpinpointable person. What hope is left?

You can help stop the madness. Google 'pro ana/mia site ban' and read the millions of testimonies and stories provided. Many newssites and womens sites now feature entire sections devoted to the stop of this horrible crime. The 'pro' sites lay claim that they are "in no way trying to make anybody get an ED, or even help them", but rather, "getting support for ourselves that keeps us alive."
