Wicked to Fly into Australia for July '08 Opening
Melbourne, Australia will be home to a new production of the smash musical Wicked, which will open at Melbourne's Regent Theatre in July 2008.
This will be the fourth international production of Wicked. A London production opened in September 2006 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, and Wicked is scheduled to begin performances in June in Tokyo, Japan and in November in Stuttgart, Germany. These productions will join the four current North American companies of Wicked: in New York City on Broadway at the Gershwin Theater, in Chicago at the Ford Center for Performing Arts/Oriental Theatre, in Los Angeles at the Pantages Theatre, and on National Tour.
Producer David Stone announced, "We're delighted that Melbourne will be the home for the fourth international production of Wicked. We're looking forward to working with John Frost and the Gordon/Frost Organization and know that Australian audiences will be just as enchanted by Wicked as the audiences are in America and England."
Casting details for the Melbourne company will be announced at a later date.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, the show has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. It is directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. Wicked is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.
Winner of 15 major awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, Wicked "is the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch," as described in press notes.
Wicked features set design by Tony Award winner Eugene Lee, costume design by Tony Award winner Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and sound design by Tony Meola. The orchestrations are by William David Brohn, with dance arrangements by James Lynn Abbott.

That same day, the New York company will also welcome Kendra Kassebaum as Glinda and Sebastian Arcelus as Fiyero. Both Kassebaum and Arcelus appeared in the tour of Wicked as well.
The Broadway cast of Wicked currently features Ana Gasteyer (Elphaba), Kate Reinders (Glinda), David Garrison (the Wizard), Jayne Houdyshell (Madame Morrible), Derrick Williams (Fiyero), Jenna Leigh Green (Nessarose), Logan Lipton (Boq) and Steven Skybell (Dr. Dillamond).

She received a Drama Desk nomination for her work in Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party, and her other theatrical credits include Crimes of the Heart, Time and Again, A Class Act, Cloud 9, Snapshots, Mata Hari and the national tour of Wicked. Murney also portrayed Florence in the Chess benefit concert for The Actors' Fund of America and was part of the all-star Children of Eden concert as well.
Kendra Kassebaum, who created the role of Glinda in the national tour of Wicked, has been seen on Broadway in Rent and the Tony-winning revival of Assassins. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel, which turned every Oz myth inside out, Wicked explores the early life of the witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba. The two main characters meet at Shiz, a school where both hope to take up sorcery. Glinda is madly popular and Elphaba is, well, green. By a misunderstanding, they wind up roommates and, after an initial period of mutual loathing, begin to learn something about each other. Their life paths continue to intersect through a shared love, entry into the Emerald City and interaction with the Wizard himself. Eventually, their choices and convictions take them on widely different paths.

Produced by composer Stephen Schwartz for Decca Broadway, the album has been the fastest selling original cast recording in years, has regularly appeared on the list of Amazon's top-selling albums and is currently #1 on Billboard's Top Cast Album Chart, the position it occupied when the chart debuted in January 2006.
Since opening at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003, Wicked has regularly broken house records with box office receipts of more than $1.4 million per week. For the week ending November 24, 2006, the show broke the all-time Broadway record with a weekly box office take of more than $1.7 million.
Full-Length Wicked May Fly Into Japan in 2007
Variety reports that a full-scale production of the Broadway smash Wicked may soon be flying to Japan.
"We now have fairly definite plans with the Shiki Theatrical Company (Japanese tours of The Lion King and Mamma Mia!) to undertake a full Japanese language production in 2007," said Marc Platt, one of Wicked's producers.
The Japanese Wicked staging would be presented before audiences who might already have had exposure to the musical's first act. A 30-minute version is currently playing Osaka's Universal Studios theme park. With the aid of composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and bookwriter Winnie Holzman, Wicked was cut down to focus on the troubled friendship between misunderstood Elphaba and popular Glinda; it ends with "Defying Gravity," the first-act finale.
The upcoming full-length production will also be performed all in Japanese; about 30% of the abbreviated theme park version is in English.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. It is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.
Wicked, the highest grossing show on Broadway and across the country, currently has three companies in North America: on Broadway; on a National Tour; and in a separate, open-ended engagement at Chicago's Ford Center for Performing Arts/Oriental Theatre. When the upcoming Los Angeles production begins in February, there will be four North American companies of Wicked running concurrently. A London production begins performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September.
Winner of 15 major awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, the show "is the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Producer Marc Platt said, "The reception to Wicked in Los Angeles during its sold-out seven-week run in the summer of 2005 exceeded our wildest expectations. The enthusiasm generated by the audiences at the Pantages Theatre – just a few short miles away from my offices at Universal Studios where Wicked was created – was unlike the response in any other city that the show has played. It was during that run that we began to formulate the plan for a company of the show just for Los Angeles."

When the Los Angeles production begins in February, there will be four North American companies of Wicked running concurrently. A London production begins performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September.
Platt calls the upcoming Los Angeles production, "a very exciting homecoming for Wicked." "Wicked began ten years ago when Platt was president of production at Universal Pictures. He had begun developing a film based on Gregory Maguire's novel, but after Schwartz and Holzman became involved, it was decided Wicked would fare better as a Broadway musical.
