This is the Musconetcong Foundrymen Historical Society's page
The Society was formed because there is so much history in Stanhope due to being one of the major stops on the Morris Canal when it was in full operation, from 1831. It was the shipping outlet for all of Sussex County. Stanhope is home to the first iron blast furnace in New Jersey to use anthracite coal for fuel. The construction of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad in the mid-nineteenth century through Netcong also fostered the growth of the communities. During the 1870s the iron company village of Stanhope began to spread into Netcong and the former farmland there developed into a town center along Main Street.
Purposes
The purposes of the Society include:
- 1. The dissemination of historical information through publications, meetings, lectures, and marking of historic sites.
- 2. The collection and preservation of historic materials illustrating the history of Netcong, Stanhope and vicinity and making this material available to the public.
- 3. The preservation of sites and features of historic significance.
