Murrayville Pioneer Cemetery, Langley British Columbia

Murrayville Pioneer Cemetery was established in 1891 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (Cloverdale Lodge No. 15) and named the Odd Fellows Cemetery.  It has the unique feature of the oldest tombstone predating the opening of the cemetery. How is that possible? Alexander Murray drowned in the Fraser River in January of 1884 while attempting in vain to save a friend. Originally Murray was buried at the Fort Langley Cemetery but when the Odd Fellows Cemetery opened his family exhumed his body and relocated it so that he would be closer to home. (From the Langley Centennial Museum Website)

These pages will host the transcriptions of the gravestones found in this historic cemetery as photographed and transcribed in the summer of 2004.  I have photographed all of the stones in the cemetery(as of July 2004), so please contact me at treehawk@telus.net if you would like me to email you a photo of a certain stone.

Well, finally all of the stones have been transcribed and are online.  This cemetery is complete!

September 7, 2004

Sorry for the delay, summer holidays snuck up on me.  P-T are now complete and I have finished transcribing the rest of the alphabet - it is just a matter of getting it online.  Next big task will be going through the burial records to see which burials don't have stones or are the ones that are so weathered away that I could not read them.  That will take a while longer though, so don't expect miracles!

F-J and K-O are now complete and searchable on line.  Only a few letters to go and the cemetery will be complete!  After it is complete I may decide to take on the task of trying to link some of the stones to their births, marriages and deaths on the BC Vital Statistics page,  but that will be a slow undertaking if I do, so don't expect it to happen too soon!

August 9, 2004

Sorry for the delay.  My computer has been causing some trouble and I could not get the files to download.  I now have completed all transcriptions for A-E and they are all online and available to you.  I have also completed F-M but once again I am having difficulty with uploading them to the site, so they are not all available as yet.  I hope to have the rest completed and available by the end of August.

The searchable index to Murrayville Cemetery can be found at http://www.langleymuseum.org/heritage_cemetery_database_intro.asp

This includes everyone buried in the cemetery, including those without markers, so if you see a name on the index that is not listed in the completed transcriptions, they either do not have a marker or the marker was destroyed (there were a couple of spots with the remnants of broken stones).

All pages have been updated with names from section 1 of my additions.  At the moment I have 3 other sets of additions and should hopefully have the cemetery photos completed next weekend.  There are at least 700 -1000 more names to be added over the next month or so.  If you are not sure if your family is buried here, the Langley Centennial Museum site has a searchable index to those buried in Murrayville Cemetery on their website (I'll add a link at a later date - for now just type Langley BC Museum into a search engine).

The A-E section has been updated with another 100 or so names, with many more still waiting to be transcribed and added in the near future.  I have almost completed photographing the entire cemetery and hope to have it completed by the beginning of July.

This site will be under construction over the next couple of months, so please check back often to see whether your ancestor or relative has been added.  Right now I have only added the first 500 or so that I have transcribed from the photographs that I have taken. I will be adding more as I photograph and transcribe them.
