Cycle Speedway originated around 1946 in England - with lads racing around old bomb craters. They now race on an oval shape track to see who can cross the finish line first. Collecting the most points. Basically the same as motorised speedway, except they use pedal/leg power, How many laps they do depends on their age group, the most being 4 laps,
There are various types of racing in this sport - Tiny tots ( 4 yrs & under) are non competitive - a fun grade, ( 1) There is individual racing where riders race for points for themselves, ( 2 )There is team racing where riders race for points for their clubs team, ( 3 ) There is team and individual racing in world championships - team racing in this is points for your countries team.
Murraylands Cycle Speedway Club was launched on 31st May 1998 and represents affordable fun and fitness for the whole family. The Murray Bridge track was originally constructed in 1988, At the moment we are the only cycle speedway club operating in South Australia that is not based in Adelaide. The track has a dolomite surface, is oval in shape and flat (nothing like a BMX track that has jumps) The club is run by a small team of dedicated volunteers, committed to providing a fun sport that all age groups may enjoy. Tiny Tots - Grandparents can participate in a family day together.
The more serious competitors can display their skills among peers in Open Championships and Interclub events.World Championships are held every two years where countries battle for various Individual titles and Team titles.Countries that usually compete are Australia, England, Scotland, Poland, Wales, Ireland, Holland, America.
In 2009 the World Championships were here in Australia......
In 2011 they will be in.....
