Munchkins are fairly new breed of cat(not rare). The original two females, that were used for the foundation of the breed, who had short legs, were discovered in the Southern United States. Munchkins are a natural mutation, not a man made breed. They have a very sweet and loveable personality.
The only acceptable outcross in a Munchkin are domestic cats. A Munchkin is not to look like a recognized breed. Munchkins can have both long and short legged kittens in a litter, they are called Non-standard(long) and Standard(short).
In 1990, a captive breeding program was initiated and "baby legs" kittens were on their way to becoming an established breed in "The International Cat Association" now called Munchkins.
