Letter From Major Riddell...

LETTER FROM MAJOR RIDDELL:

Friends, Families and Key Volunteers of Company A,

Attached is a photo we took of the company on February 9, 2005.  The next day at 1300 eight members of our company left Cherry Point Air Station bound for Iraq.  Three days later eighty-five of us joined them, with the rest of the company to follow in the coming weeks.

We currently stand at 115 Marines strong and 30 additional Marines are due to join us in April.  While the majority of our ranks are made up of Marines from Oregon, we also have representation from New Jersey, New York, Texas, Louisiana, California, Idaho, Michigan and Washington.  Fifty-eight are on their second combat deployment to Iraq, most of them within the last two years.  One is on his third.  The remaining all signed their enlistment contracts or returned to the Marine Corps after the war in Iraq started. They knew what they were getting themselves into.  Two are Navy Corpsmen. We have one female Marine, who is also a certified Marine Corps Hand to Hand Combat Instructor.  All but one are reservists.  The majority list their civilian occupation as student.  We are composed of Police Officers, Carpenters, Salesmen, a Youth Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Customer Service Managers, Heavy Equipment Operators, Mechanics, a Corrections Officer, Masons, Contractors, Commercial Truck Drivers and one misguided Infantry Officer turned Attorney turned Combat Engineer.  In keeping with the tradition of the Minutemen of Revolutionary War, all leave behind careers, lives and families to serve their country.  Eighty-three or 72% are below the age of twenty-five.  The youngest was born on May 14, 1986.  The eldest was born on December 19, 1959.  Forty-five are married.  Three leave behind pregnant wives.  Three have become fathers since our activation date of January 4, 2005.  In the past five months we have received extensive training in:  convoy operations; mine detection and demolition; machine gun employment; combat life saving; building fortifications; road repair and construction; and combat marksmanship.  We are outfitted with the finest body armour, uniforms, communication assets and weapons available. Approximately seven-hundred and twenty people attended our send off, and over two-hundred claim membership to the company's Key Volunteer Network. We are a cross section of society, an all volunteer force and the face of the modern American military.  We call ourselves "The Anvil" and I feel sorry for anyone who gets in our way.

Semper Fidelis,

Major Sean J. Riddell, USMCR
