Running of the Bulls

The "Running of the Bulls"

The "Running of the Bulls" also known as "Encierro", takes place during the Festival of San Fermin. The festival is held in the city of Pampolana in Northern Spain between July 7th and July 14th. Usually the bulls run on a course of a sectioned-off area of a town's street.  Most injuries can happen by being  trampled by other runners or they pull the bull's tail which makes the bull mad.

The "Running of the Bulls" originally came about to transfer the bulls from outside of the town into the bullring. The Plaza del Castillo was originally used for the bullfights until the bullring was built. The "Encierro" starts when the Sand Saturnino Church clock strikes 8:00 in the morning.

The length of  "Running of the Bulls" is 790 to 830 meters long and is approximately a half mile. This event is so old that is dates back during the 1800's. When you run in this event it usually lasts about 2 or 3 minutes. At this time, two rockets are fired out. The first rocket signifies the bulls have left their corrals. The second rocket signifies the bulls are now running in the streets with eight oxen in front of them.

Some of the rules for the runners of the"Running of the Bulls" are that you must be 18 years and older to participate. It is forbidden to get the bulls attention or to call to the bulls. No one can take pictures from the fences or inside the runway without permission. Most importantly, if you fall, the best thing to do is to curl up in a ball and not move because the bull will only  chase you if he sees you running!

Don't ask I already know that's going to hurt in the morning!

The bulls are very agressive and sometimes can get out of control!
